★★★★☆ (4/5)
Festival goers at second day of Leeds’s biggest and annual music festivals were blown away by a spectacular show from headliners ‘ THE 1975 ‘ who close second day of ‘ LEEDS FESTIVAL 2019 ‘ with an outstanding show of music and light projections. They prove the critics wrong why their actually headlining Reading and Leeds festivals this year.
Through-out the second day of the festival seen some massive and great performances from the likes of… Royal Blood, Dave, Bowling For Soup, Dappy, Hobo Johnston, Marsicans, YOU ME AT SIX, The Wombats, Juice WRLD, Charli XCX, Pale Waves, Ten Tonnes, Black Honey, Mini Mansions, TWIN ATLANTIC, The LaFontaines and many more.
Kicking off the second day at ‘ LEEDS FESTIVAL 2019 ‘ on the Main Stage were London’s indie-alternative rock band ‘ KAWALA ‘, over on the BBC RADIO 1 stage seen ‘ BLOXX ‘ from Uxbridge open up the stage. On the BBC Radio 1 Stage seen one of Scotland’s greatest current bands ‘ THE LAFONTAINES ‘ open up the tent. ‘ IN YOUR PRIME ‘ opened THE PIT STAGE, on the Festival Republic Stage seen ‘ ZUZU ‘ open the tent, and on the BBC Introducing Stage seen ‘ LEODIS ‘ open up the second day at ‘ LEEDS FESTIVAL 2019 ‘.
‘ KAWALA ‘ are an indie-alternative rock band from London. The five-piece band are consisting of ‘ Jim Higson ‘ on lead-vocals, ‘ Daniel McCarthy ‘ on guitar and vocals, ‘ Ben Batten ‘ on drums, ‘ Reeve Coulson ‘ on bass and ‘ Dan Lee ‘ on guitar. ‘ KAWALA ‘ are building up to release their forthcoming debut album, in the past the year they’ve release two EP’s titled ‘ D.I.L.Y.D ‘ last year and ‘ Counting the Miles ‘ this year. As well as releasing a number of singles such as ‘ Beautiful Escape ‘ , ‘ Do It Like You Do ‘, ‘ Kept in the Dark ‘, ‘ Runway ‘, ‘ Moonlight ‘ and many more.
The band bought in a decent size crowd to the Main-Stage, this would have been a massive achievement for their career as a band so far but would have also been a very scary moment as well performing somewhere as massive as Reading and Leeds Festivals on the Main-Stage for a small upcoming band. I personally think a much smaller tent stage would have been more ideal for them but giving the chance to play on Main-Stage gave them a much wider audience to explore and listen to their music and maybe ending up liking their music.
The band’s set was a great performance and the crowd’s engagement was shown they were really loving the band’s set on the Main-Stage. ‘ KAWALA ‘ themselves also looked like they were really enjoying it as well and really engaging with the Yorkshire crowd. The band are definitely making something for their name and will hopefully be playing on other stages at future years of Reading and Leeds festivals later in the day.
Now over on the BBC Radio 1 Dance Stage, seen one of Scotland’s dance and hip-hop, indie-rock band’s ‘ The LaFontaines ‘ took to the stage in front of a decent size crowd in the tent. Formed during 2008 in Motherwell, Scotland. The now three-piece band used to be a five-piece, is now consisting of ‘ Kerr Okan ‘ on lead vocals, ‘ Jamie Kennan ‘ on backing vocals and drums, and ‘ Darren McCaughey ‘ on guitar and production.
Signed to ‘ So Recordings ‘ the three-piece have released three studio albums since 2015, their debut album titled ‘ Class ‘ was released during 2015, their successful sophomore album ‘ Common People ‘ was released during 2017, and their current released third studio album ‘ Junior ‘ which was released this summer.
‘ The LaFontaines ‘ are known for their belters such as ‘ All She Knows ‘, ‘ Under the Storm ‘, ‘ King ‘, ‘ Release the Hounds ‘, ‘ Asleep ‘, ‘ Up ‘, and most recently released single ‘ Alpha ‘. The band have been touring non-stop over the past ten years or so, since forming they’ve have had the lucky chance to open up for the likes of ‘ TWIN ATLANTIC ‘, ‘ DEAF HAVANA ‘, and ‘ DON BROCO ‘ on tour around the United Kingdom and Europe. They’ve also played some big festivals over the years as well including… ‘ T IN THE PARK ‘, ‘ Reading and Leeds Festivals ‘, ‘ Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival ‘, and ‘ TRNSMT Festival ‘. As well as playing some notable hometown shows at Glasgow’s ‘ Barrowland Ballroom ‘, ‘ King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut ‘, ‘ O2 ABC ‘, and Motherwell’s ‘ Concert Hall Theatre ‘.
Storming onto the stage at ‘ LEEDS FESTIVAL 2019 ‘ to their latest released single ‘ Alpha ‘from their latest released album ‘ Junior ‘, the crowd were already getting started in tent by dancing, moshing, jumping and singing along to their songs. There was some home-crowd in the tent as the Scottish flag was noticeable in the crowd. Their set continued to prove why their one of the best current upcoming bands in Scotland right now.
‘ The LaFontaines ‘ are definitely needing to be given the chance to get their name out there now especially away from Scotland where they’ve already made their name as a band and who already love them. The band also performed their mash-up track ‘ Pon De Fonts ‘ which also included elements of Beyonce’s ‘ Run The World (Girls) ‘, which really got the crowd going especially when front-man ‘ Kerr Okan ‘ was asking the crowd to jump and come closer to the stage, which the crowd did do.
‘ Kerr Okan ‘ did also take a moment to “ Thank the crowd for coming to see them perform at… LEEDS FESTIVAL and also asked them to go and buy their new record “ Junior “ joking to the crowd at they needed petrol money to get back home to Scotland “.
Their set was definitely a great way to start a second day at ‘ LEEDS FESTIVAL 2019 ‘. For sure it kept the great mood from yesterday’s great line-up and epic headline performance from the mighty ‘ FOO FIGHTERS ‘. One day definitely hope we will see ‘ The LaFontaines ‘ playing on the bigger stages later in the day at future ‘ Reading and Leeds Festivals ‘.
The second day continued to be another day of great all-genre music on all stages across the day. On the Main-Stage seen epic performances from the live comeback from ‘ TWIN ATLANTIC ‘ and also performances from… Charli XCX, Juice WRLD, YOU ME AT SIX, and The Wombats. The band performed in front of a massive green backdrop with had ‘ TWIN ATLANTIC ‘ written all over it which suggests their forthcoming album is going to have green affect to their album compared to their previous album which was red. Overall it was a great performance and always great to see the band live and can’t wait for their forthcoming album.
Staying at the Main-Stage seen ‘ Charlotte Emma Aitchison ‘ aka… ‘ Charli XCX ‘ take to the stage. ‘ The 1975 ‘ rocked up on stage performing their new track ‘ People ‘ which has been turning heads as far from what you expect from the band left a lot people frustrated as wasn’t their type of music you’ve heard from past three albums. But to be fair credit was given to the band as their bringing something different to their set and will be only time during set you will get to hear any new music from them.
They soon returned to what they are known for playing tracks like ‘ She’s American ‘, ‘ Love Me ‘, and ‘ Someone Else ‘.
Front-man ‘ Matty Healy ‘ is clearly in full form as he struts around the stage looking a little intoxicated and rather full of himself. “ We just keep getting better and better and better… ” claims the front-man as his head grows word by word. But in all fairness they really have upped their game over the past few years.
Their set continued to play hits by hits including likes of old fan favourites like ‘ Girls ‘, ‘ Robbers ‘, and ‘ fallforyou ‘. During their tracks ‘ TOOTIMETOOTIMETOOTIME ‘ and ‘ Sincerity Is Scary ‘ which sees ‘ Matt Healy ‘ grabbing his bag and hat to recreate the music video on stage with some dancing on treadmill which makes a very interesting point in the show for fans. As ever ‘ THE 1975 ‘ try to make a point about climate change and political issues with a number of speaches including that of Greta Thunberg (climate change activist) who recorded an essay track with the band just recently.
Their huge Headline set closed with a bang with fantastic fan favourites ‘ Chocolate ‘, ‘ Sex ‘, and ‘ The Sound ‘ which rounded off the evening perfectly. It’s a set that we feel ‘ THE 1975 ‘ have pulled off as a main stage headliner but it couldn’t have come at a better time for them as they are at the peak of their musical careers. As well as their brand new album release next year.
