CANNIBAL CORPSE // BARROWLANDS, GLASGOW

How do you like your metal? Frantic old skool? 90's death? Thrashy metal? Brutal as f*ck?

Schizophrenia - formed in 2016 in Antwerp this death/thrash outfit, comprised of Romeo Promos Promopoulos (guitars, also try and say that name times fast!) , Ricky Mandozzi (vocals, bass), Lorenzo Vissol (drums) and Marty VK (guitars) are aptly named as I'd never heard of them before tonight and the first thing I thought was they have a similar sound to the Schizophrenia album by Sepultura! They played thrashy as f*ck songs like Souls of Retribution and the self titled Schizophrenia then played a song chosen by the audience - Slayers Necrophiliac, with their own twist!

Keep an eye out for this lot as they're damn good and you should see them if you can!

Immolation - founded in 1986, under the name Rigor Mortis, and one of the founding pioneers of death metal not only in Yonkers but New York. Comprised of Ross Dolan (bass, vocals), Robert Vigna (guitars), Steve Shalaty (drums) and Alex Bouks (guitars). They're a good band but not a great band, ironically, however that is not a reflection of their musical abilities(which are very good) but more to do with the fact that they dont stick out. They played some right bangers though - opening with a recording of Abandoned as an intro and then into An Act of God as their opening song and playing through to the likes of A Glorious Epoch (f cking ace btw) and Noise of Thorns then ending on a high note with Into Everlasting Fire. Wicked!

If you want to see them you'll probably have to keep an eye out for them as a support band, in fact I don't think I've ever seen them as a headliner. They are good and worth catching but they're a bit formulaic (even though they're one of the bands that invented the formula) and although they came first Autopsy do it better. Also the bald guitarist might be in the wrong band given his antics...

Municipal Waste - Cobbled together out of the spare parts found at the bottom of a KFC bucket in 2001 comprising Ryan Waste (Guitars/Backing Vocals), Tony Foresta (Lead Vocals), Land Phil (Bass, Backing Vocals) and Dave Witte (Drums) they were awesome as always. If you're still crying over Slayer retiring go see these guys. Thrashy and bouncy opening with The Executioner, keeping the mood going with Grave Dive and The Thrashing of The Christ (f ck you Mel G) and closing with Born to Party (and damn they like to party!) with a decent mosh pit and a sense of humour as well! If you like Slayer/Suicidal tendencies stuff then you'll enjoy their shows. They have their own twist on these genres and that's what makes them great!

The meat and bones of the show and why I bothered to get out of bed that morning - Cannibal Corpse!

One of the founding fathers of death metal (formed in 1988) they're brutal, loud and where the f ck is George "Corpsegrinder" Fishers neck? Has he ever had one? There are also some other folk in the band - Alex Webster (Bass), Paul Mazurkiewicz (Drums), Rob Barrett (Guitars), Erik Rutan (Guitars). However they all have necks. Unlike George.

You know what you're getting with these nutters and they did not disappoint with a heady mix of classics like "F*cked With a Knife" (bit weird hearing a bunch of ladies cheering for that one...even George "where's my f*cking neck?" Corpsegrinder thought so) to their latest offering "Chaos Horrific". True to brutal death metal form and no disappointments! They also played classics like Hammer Smashed Face and Scourge of Iron.

Also for everyones peace of mind - he confirmed that he beat the local soft toy claw machine. Iykyk.
