The moment Tom Walker stepped onto the stage, a sense of closeness filled the dark interior of the small, intimate venue. The crowd, perhaps a couple of hundred strong, was eager, but calm, preparing themselves for something special. As the lights dimmed, a hush settled over the room. Walker began his set diving straight into the new album’s title track. The song starts with Tom speaking the lyrics,  his voice, raspy and rich, sweeps through the space, drawing everyone in.

In venues like Beat Generator, Walker’s music shines. In the darkness of this small room, his raw, emotional presence is laid bare. His acoustic guitar work was crisp but understated, allowing his voice to take centre stage. You can hear every subtle crack and roar in his delivery. It’s his unique voice that gives his music that rugged, authentic edge. As he sings, it feels less like a performance and more like a conversation between friends.

The new songs were strong, and ‘I Am’ was followed by ‘Head Under Water’ and ‘Wait for You’. The poignant ‘Lifeline’ created a visceral response from the crowd with some in tears.

Next up was one of the standout moments of the night that came with “Leave a Light On,” the song that shot him into the spotlight. In this stripped-down setting, the track sheds its radio polish, becoming a raw, vulnerable plea. Walker’s roared chorus, loaded with emotion, hits powerful high notes while keeping the sincerity of the lyrics. As the chorus rang out, the audience was not just listening; they were feeling every word. It was a communal moment, shared between artist and audience, brought together by the emotion that Walker channels so effortlessly.

In between songs, Walker’s laid-back personality comes through. Scot’s born, he speaks in his parent’s accent at his Scottish gigs. He cracks a few jokes, thanking the audience for coming out on a school night and challenging them to join in with more energy than the crowd in Edinburgh had the night before. Behind the banter, there is a genuine humility, and it’s clear he doesn’t take any of this for granted. His interactions with the crowd feel intimate and personal like he’s speaking to a room full of friends rather than just faceless fans.

‘Echoes’ hits a high-energy note halfway through the set, showing off Walker’s range of musicality with its techno chorus. Tom invited the crowd to dance along and they dived straight in.

The evening closes with another track from the new album. ‘Burn’ was a perfect end to the set and had the crowd roaring out the chorus of a song that must have been new to many. As Walker belted out the final notes, the audience erupted in applause. These small gigs feel like an insider’s secret, a moment of joy that only those in this small room were lucky enough to experience.

In this intimate setting, Tom Walker proves that he doesn’t need the gloss of big productions to make an impact. His power lies in his voice, his openness, and his ability to connect deeply with his audience, one song at a time.
