It is a difficult job to get Londoners to abandon the sunshine on a hot Friday evening but here we are – just below the beating heart of Europe’s biggest city, Dea Matrona managed to pull out a sell-out show. The band hailing from Ireland entered the stage in a whirlwind of energy, and instantly got the crowd cheering and dancing to their signature blend of rock, soul and bluesy beats. Their setlist, a mix of originals and covers, echoed Fleetwood Mac and T.Rex, with a mix of early The Runaways. I was impressed by their stage presence and interaction with the crowd and I found myself enjoying every single song.

Dea Matrona delivered a setlist that was diverse and dynamic – from songs like Stamp on It and Get My Mind Off, with guitar solos and intense bass lines, to covers that the whole of the audience sand along to. There was a bit for everyone – intense rock songs, an acoustic set, a country song (with the mandatory cowboy hats on which they were then commanded by the audience to keep on) and an electrifying encore.

Highlight of the night was when the song Black Rain came on – a slower song which had everyone’s phones and lighters shining towards the stage to accompany its sentimental melody. We were also presented with songs with disco beats and drum solos, only to show the diversity of Dea Matrona and their versatility in pleasing everyone’s taste without compromising on their signature sound.

Overall it was a very enjoyable gig and the girls also got swarmed in the merch booth which shows their fanbase’s dedication and support. Definitely a band to catch again when they’re in town.
