DYLAN JOHN THOMAS // OVO HYDRO, GLASGOW

Dylan John Thomas: A Triumph at the OVO Hydro, Glasgow

★★★★★ (5/5)

Dylan John Thomas’s meteoric rise through Scotland’s music scene reached a new pinnacle last night at the OVO Hydro in Glasgow. From interviewing him at Leeds Festival 2023, where he was brimming with optimism for the year ahead, to watching his progression through the O2 Academy in Edinburgh and his commanding headline set at TRNSMT Festival, it’s been a privilege to witness his journey. Now, performing at one of Scotland’s largest and most iconic live music venues, Dylan delivered a headline show that solidified his place as one of the country’s most exciting musical talents.

The crowd was made up of a mix of fans but predominantly young teens were out in force, many being turned away by security for being too young, too drunk or for not having a ticket.  Security tents were a new addition for getting in, and showed that the Security team at the Hydro were very much taking safety of fans very seriously. A few of the fans were visibly ill as we were all leaving and the staff at the Hydro were doing there best to ensure the welfare of these young fans, this and the additional security was a testament to the venue and its place at the top of the Scottish Live Music Scene.

The night opened with an electric rendition of one of his most beloved tracks, “Jenna.” As soon as the first chords rang out, the crowd erupted into cheers and sang along with unrelenting energy. It was clear from the outset that this was more than just a gig—it was a homecoming of sorts, with Dylan feeding off the love and excitement radiating from his audience. His talent and authenticity shone through as he effortlessly commanded the stage, making the massive venue feel alive with energy and excitement.

One of the most heartfelt moments of the evening came with his performance of “Wake Up Ma.” This poignant, soulful ballad silenced the Hydro as fans hung on every word. With its raw emotion and hauntingly beautiful lyrics, the song was a powerful reminder of Dylan’s ability to connect on a deeply personal level. It was a moment of vulnerability, and the audience responded with overwhelming warmth, giving the performance a communal, almost sacred quality.

Midway through the set, Dylan surprised the crowd with a playful cover of ABBA’s “Mamma Mia,”putting his unique twist on the pop classic. The crowd loved every second, dancing and singing along, but Dylan’s down-to-earth nature took center stage when he stopped halfway through the song to address a commotion in the crowd. Making sure fans were safe and okay, he paused, showing the care and attentiveness that makes him such a beloved performer. Once assured everything was fine, he picked the song back up, delivering it with his signature charm.

Fan favourites like “Up in the Air” and “Feel the Fire” were, as expected, standout moments of the night. The atmosphere was electric as the audience sang every lyric with unbridled passion. Dylan’s ability to blend heartfelt lyrics with infectious melodies was on full display, showcasing why his music resonates so deeply with fans old and new. The energy in the Hydro was palpable, with each song bringing its own wave of cheers and singalongs.

The OVO Hydro show wasn’t just a performance; it was a celebration of Dylan John Thomas’s incredible journey. From festival newcomer to headlining one of Scotland’s biggest venues, his rise has been nothing short of remarkable. Watching him grow over the past year has been inspiring, and this milestone show felt like a fitting reward for all his hard work and dedication. If last night is anything to go by, Dylan’s future looks brighter than ever, and the Scottish music scene couldn’t be in better hands.
