★★★★☆ (4/5)
Alter Bridge brought their Pawns & Kings Tour to Glasgow’s OVO Hydro on this cold December night, and despite it being a ‘school night’ as some would call it, that didn’t stop the hundreds of rock fans heading down for a night of good music and beer.
Starting off was Mammoth WVH to warm up the crowd by playing songs from their album “Mammoth WVH” which was released in 2021.
The room was still starting to fill as Mammoth WVH rocked the stage, starting with their song “Mammoth” to get the crowd hyped for the night. As they continued to blast through their set the crowd was becoming more engaging, nodding their heads, and clapping along. Lead of the band, Wolfgang Van Halen introduced the band halfway through the set and chatted for a few minutes receiving a crowd full of cheers before moving onto their last few songs that included their first ever song released “Distance”, which was a tribute to Wolfgang’s father Eddie Van Halen who was part of the band ‘Van Halen’. Mammoth WVH ended their set on a high with their song “Don’t Back Down”, the crowd clapping along to the beats of the drums as Wolfgang produced some brilliant vocals. Their set comes to an end as they announce their departure and take a bow together before leaving the stage followed by a loud applause from the crowd.
The final band before Alter Bridge was no other than the amazing ‘Halestorm’ who made a grand entrance with the lead vocalist Lzzy walking onto the stage in complete darkness showing off her amazing vocals before the rest of the band follow and they dive right into their first song ‘The Steeple’. The crowd is now pretty much full and fully engaging in Halestorm’s set with their hands in the air and loud cheers erupting as Lzzy introduces the band starting with the drummer Arejay who happens to be Lzzy’s little brother followed by the other members Joe Hottinger and Josh Smith.
Onto the 4th song and Lzzy announces this song is for the woman of the crowd and begins their song ‘Bombshell’ followed by ‘Mine’. Towards the end of their set ‘Familiar Taste Of Poison’ has just came to an end and the band walk off the stage in darkness leaving the spotlight on Arejay who goes on to play an incredible drum solo, twirling his drum sticks around as he bashes the drums to a beat. Arejay gets the crowd to join in with cheers and clapping along with his drumbeats ranging from fast to slow beats before coming to an end for the rest of the band to join him back on stage for a couple of more songs ending on ‘I Miss the Misery’. Lzzy ends their set with ‘Glasgow we love you’ followed by a final scream and a bow from the band before they leave the stage.
The crowd is waiting in anticipation ready for Alter Bridge to take the stage and after a short break, the lights go out and the music starts as the band walk on stage and get right into their first song ‘Silver Tongue’. It took a few songs for the crowd to get into their set and by the fourth song ‘The Other Side’ they had their hands in the air clapping along with the sound of the guitars and drums. By the time the chorus came along there were some people up on shoulders and you could hear the voice of the crowd singing along above the heavy drumbeats and guitar.
Along came ‘In Loving Memory’ which was played acoustically. The crowd watched on quietly before singing along to the chorus and lit up the room with their phone torches. It’s now near the end of their set and next up is ‘Metalingus’ which is clearly a crowd favourite as they begin to bounce along with the lead singer Myles crouching down and asking the crowd ‘how low can you go?’ the crowd then follow his lead and get down low as the guitars and drums continue the beat before Myles continues singing a few lines and just as the chorus hits, the crowd bounce up in complete unison with the smoke canons going off.
Myles goes on to thank the other bands who performed tonight followed by the crowd showing their appreciation. It’s almost the end of the night and the band are onto their final song ‘Open Your Eyes’. The band thank the crowd again throwing their guitar picks into the crowd and waving goodbye before the lights dim down and they walk off the stage. Due to issues with timing ‘Pawns & Kings’ was removed from the setlist so few moments later the band return for their final song ‘Rise Today’ which was the perfect ending to a brilliant night of good music.
