MARIKA HACKMAN // CONCORDE 2, BRIGHTON
MARIKA HACKMAN //
CONCORDE 2, BRIGHTON
Marika Hackman performs a long awaited headline show in Brighton with her songs about post Break-up and relationships to a dedicated fan base!
★★★★☆ (4/5)
Marika Hackman, a 28 year old multi- instrumentalist and songwriter from Hampshire last seen in Brighton performing her headline songs from the album ‘I am not your Man’ and is more noted with her dark, melancholic lyrics and had soon risen swiftly from the alt-folk scene with her strong honest melancholic vocals and song writing! The Concorde’s intimate stage provided the setting for tonight’s show, for Marika Hochman’s maturity, witty style and for her wringing out her past!
In contrast in a lighter frame of mind, ‘Do Nothing’, the Nottingham quartet, punk influenced band, provide a more up-tempo set as the support act for ‘Marika Hackman’. The base line hits hard and the lyrics are tastefully played out to match their grooves. ‘Do Nothing’ perform recent singles ‘Waitress’, a slower affair and the newly in February realised single ‘Fits’. The band consisting of Lead singer Chris Bailey who stands on stage, slick persona in style, chanting out the songs, showcasing ‘Comedy Gold’, yet to be released in April. He has all the attention he deserves from the audience and certainly are a band to watch for, recently supporting their Hero’s ‘Interpol’, playing a live show In Moscow, for an inspirational near future!
Songs about break-up’s, sex and orientation are a common affair in song writing which reflects with the opening song ‘the One’, song to the gathered fan base of student devotees! Dressed in boiler suits, the band comfortably perform, ‘Time has been Reckless’ and the songs to provoke a smile as well as making serious points come across accordingly!
Half way through the set Hackman announces “the more miserable stuff ”,to the audience as she is left to perform a set of melancholic songs, ‘Wanderlust’, ‘Claude’s Girl’ and ‘Cigarette’, played out solo with only her and the guitar!
With the introduction to the band members to the audience, Marika Hackman plays out the song ’Blow’ taken from her recent album’ Any Human Friend’, a more sincere passionate take with self-reflection and the more crudest ‘Hand solo’.
The set could have benefited from with some more upbeat songs, but the balance, variety and sharpness of the songs are a good thing and stick in one’s mind! Conventionally, the evening soon comes to a close with ‘Human Friend’ with Hackman saying her good byes to the captivated audience wishing everyone to “… be kinder to yourself“!
