Gabrielle Aplin returned to Glasgow’s St Lukes venue on Wednesday, for an intimate evening of music and anecdotes, which thrilled the near capacity audience. The unmistakable voice of the English singer songwriter is a thing of beauty, gentle, haunting, and suits her musical genre perfectly, with her name becomming known way back in 2010, after posting video clips of her singing acoustic cover versions of bigger hits onto her youtube channel. She quickly received a recording contract with Parlophone before being asked to cover the Frankie Goes To Hollywood classic The Power of Love for the John Lewis christmas advert on independent television. Unfortunately this wouldnt be on this evenings setlist, however there would be plenty more top tunes to enthral the crowd.

The 16 track strong setlist this evening opens with Until the Sun Comes Up and Like You Say You Do. Now joining her bandmates on guitar she carries on with Panic Cord, Heavy Heart and Kitsugi. The respect from the audience is noted, you can hear a pin drop during the music and the applause at the end is huge. Waking Up Slow keeps the crowd on their toes, with a lively beat, but things afre soon slowed again for another heartfelt ballad in Nothing Really Matters.

Strange, Home Is Where Your Heart Is and Dear Happy closed the first part of the set, and Aplin plus band left to a standing ovation. They returned within a few minutes for a two track encore, lifting the mood again with the uptempo Sweet Nothing and closing the evening with Miss You.

This was a decent concert with the singer songwriter in a smaller, more intimate venue, and the acoustics lent themselves perfectly to the music being showcased, although at times she maybe tried too hard to emulate the John Lewis advert, as when she lifted the mood she performed those more lively tunes perfectly well too. However, the crowd all seemed to have had an entertaining evening, a great venue, a great voice and a great night out.
