TWIN ATLANTIC // KING TUT'S WAH WAH HUT, GLASGOW
GLASGOW’S TWIN ATLANTIC DOUBLE UP THE POWER FOR TWIN INTIMATE SHOWS
★★★★★ (5/5)
Glasgow’s alternative rockers Twin Atlantic are back with a new bunch of recordings, their fifth album Power having been released at the end of January. Tonight they will take the chance to showcase some of these tracks by playing not one but two sell out shows in the city’s King Tuts Wah Wah Hut in the same evening. And thats no mean feat !!
The atmosphere was building long before the lights dimmed and the band took to the small stage in the iconic venue, a packed audience desperate to see their idols and many having brought copies of the new album hoping for an autograph. The roar was deafening as they finally opened with Oh Euphoria, also the opening track from the new record and got the crowd going from the first beats. Novocaine followed, again from the new album and shows a new direction for the band, this track amongst others has a very 80s feel about it, and speaking with bass and keyboards player Ross McNae before the gig, he confirmed it was a new sound for the band, and they were keen to experiment with it. There are many other influences on the new music, Ross again aknowledging they are fans of many bands, Depeche Mode in particular, which explains the heavy use of keyboards on the new record.
The short 45 minute set dipped into the back catalogue now. No Sleep, which Radio 1’s Annie Mac once described as the hottest record on the planet back in 2016, Make A Beast of Myself from the 2011 album Free, and Hold On from 2014’s Great Divide, before returning to the new stuff with Volcano.
With there being 2 sets scheduled, there wasnt time for many more songs. Brothers and Sisters, Barcelona and Heart and Soul closed the 1st set. This was a great idea, allowing the younger fans a chance to see the band in the earlier show, with over 14s only for the 10pm slot. Maybe an idea for other artists in the future to bring this back, as it was a fairly popular thing having matinee shows back in the day, at venues such as The Glasgow Apollo.
This was a great set from the band, albeit a short one, but it shows the musical diversity of the newer tracks, intersperced with some older classics which kept the long term fans sweet. The new stuff is great, the established tracks sound great, Twin Atlantic are a band to catch live, bags of energy, power in the music and great hooks in the tunes. Top marks, lads!
