THE LEMON TWIGS // THE ROUNDHOUSE, LONDON
The Lemon Twigs come to town for an all spectacular show at The Roundhouse in Camden.
★★★★☆
As the crowds gradually descend into the Roundhouse the evening started on a mellow note with Singer songwriter Matt Maltese and the song ‘Like a Fish’.
The nights songs played refreshingly as one would, awaiting and longing for those long summer nights lying in meadow, daydreaming. The vocals scythed in perfect harmony with the keyboard.
The 22 year old British artist born to Canadian parents had released his long awaited debut album ‘Bad Contestant’ in 2018, which was written in a studio in Los Angeles which reflexes in style with the Californian vibe, with soul-bearing jazz Ballads evident in the songs ‘Guilty’ with lyrics filled with humour with contrast to ‘Strange Time’ with its dark, haunting-led Piano. Film music quality.
The whole set is delicious, retro and pleasant with high expectance to what the confident Matt Maltese will bring next.
Before too long two former childhood actor brothers Michael and Brian D'Addario, who form the band ‘The Lemon Twigs’, stemming from Long Island who sound like sumptuous 1970’s harmonies hit the stage with high wielding flamboyance.. The crowd cheering loudly for high expectations of a hip stage show to follow.
You must say Michael’s, High flying kicks do amaze, with the band taking a magical mystery tour around their various influences, obviously taken from their dad’s vinyl collection.
Strutting on stage like a pair from Bay City Rollers, the High Flying antics soon start with the song, ’Never in My Arms in My Heart and crowd favourite ‘Foolin’ Around’. A song that tends to tumble around in one’s head and sticks with one.
Surf pop style is evident with ‘I wanna Prove to You’, with the front row audience swaying back and forth and singing to the lyrics, which could be taken from a ‘Beach Boys’ album with some Jangly guitar melodies to boot. The Lemon Twigs to whom, run around the stage with an over the top performance display, like a theatre production.
The Band rocket along to bring you piece by piece, like a jigsaw, into how the mind of the D’Addario brother’s tick along,
The Set delves into former album tracks taken from Do Hollywood, ‘Baby, Baby’ and ‘Hi+ Low’ whom are songs seemingly conducted like 1970’s ballads and this night proved to be memorable one, to lift ones spirit.
To end proceedings, the encores melodic piano track ‘If you give Enough’, making you wanting more and leaving you with the feeling, what will be next in the musically colourful tonight’s event has been!
