THE JOY FORMIDABLE // KING TUT'S WAH WAH HUT, GLASGOW
The Welsh alternative rock trio returned to Glasgow to strut their stuff on the iconic stage of King Tuts Wah Wah Hut, and wowed their growing army of fans.
★★★★☆
The band, made up of Rhiannon “Ritzy” Bryan on guitar and vocals, Rhydian Dafydd on bass and Matthew James Thomas on drums, initially came to prominence by having the song End Tapes in the end credits of the film Twilight: Breaking Dawn, and have since went from strength to strength. With a number of recordings out on the shelves, The Joy Formidable’s fan base is ever increasing, and tonight they gave their Glasgow legion exactly what they wanted.
Tracks such as Y Bluen Eira, I Don’t Want To See You Like This, Cradle and The Wrong side got their set underway, great guitar melodies, thumping bass and drum solos, a sound not unlike The Cocteau Twins or The Cure in parts.
The Ladder Is Ours, Osterich, Passerby, the tunes kept coming and the inbetween banter kept the crowd amused. Ritzy gave them an opportunity to shout out any questions but the accents were too much and she required an interpreter, so carried on with the music instead.
Little Bllimp, Cicada and The Greatest Light is The Greatest Shade and the evening was over. It was my first encounter with the band and I must say I was impressed, as were the crowd of more familiar fans. Im sure its only a matter of time before The Joy Formidable are performing on the bigger stages of cities up and down the country, and theyre well worth a viewing if they come to a stage near you. A very entertaining night out.
