ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN // THE QUEEN'S HALL, EDINBURGH

Echo & The Bunnymen return to Scotland’s Capital for a show at Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall.

★★★★☆ (4/5)

Growing up Echo and the Bunnymen were part of the soundtrack to my life, songs such as Bring on the Dancing Horses and the Cutter were part of my life in a good way. It’s bands like this that got me hooked into music, their music appeared in films I loved such as the lost boys, generally they were a cool band with great songs.

Unbelievably I’d never seen them live, a mistake I finally got to correct with this gig.

Unfortunately I was later than I would normally be and only caught the last few songs of the support act, whose name I didn’t get and have annoyingly been unable to find out since, but what I saw suggested there is talent to be listened to, it’s a brave man who comes on stage with just his guitar and a fiddle player and a braver man still who then tackles the Rolling Stones. The fact he pulled it off suggest a potentially bright future.

Live the Bunnymen were everything I’d hoped for and more. There are a brilliant live band and unlike many of their contemporaries, Ian McCulloch’s voice has held up well. If I have one complaint it’s either than Ian was mumbling, the sound wasn’t very good or something else wasn’t right as I couldn’t make out a word he said between songs, which was disappointing.

However, the music spoke for itself, this was a greatest hits and more show. They nailed it, the audience loved it, singing and dancing along. The venue was prefect for this gig, intimate enough to feel like it was almost a private show but lively enough to remind me what a great band with great songs the Bunnymen are.

When a band writes songs such as those mentioned above plus seven seas and the killing moon, to name some among many others, this always had the potential to be a great gig, the fact it was was down to the sheer quality of the musicianship and singing.

Would I recommend going to see Echo and the Bunnymen live? Absolutely, even if you do not know them this is a great band who seem to be on a new lease of life, don’t miss it, you won’t regret it!
