METRONOMY // THE ROUNDHOUSE, LONDON
Metronomy bring their warm electronic synth charms to Camden’s Roundhouse on a cold November’s evening.
★★★★☆ (4/5)
There is always a fuzz in the air in Camden on a Friday night, especially with a great band playing in the nearby iconic Roundhouse venue with the bars in close proximity being full with music lovers young and old eagerly awaiting for the doors to open. For tonight especially with the sold out Metronomy show, the band of late, releasing their latest incarnation with their gorgeous synth pop album being called ‘Metronomy Forever ‘.
Metronomy are an electronic music band formed in 1999 which consists of members, Joseph Mount on lead Vocals, keyboards and guitar, Oscar Cash on Guitars, Anna Prior on Drums and backing vocals and Olugbenga Adelekan on Bass Guitar and vocals. Originally the band sprang up as bedroom project whilst Joseph Mount was still living with his parents and things rapidly moved on from there.
Over the years the band have drifted and shifted through different genres in between the various released albums, being one example with a more Motown feel and influenced sound with the release of ‘Love Letters’ in 2014. Tonight’s Sold out Metronomy show certainly will bring together a set spanning the hits of all the fan favourites spanning all releases.
North London’s Girl Power band ‘Girl Ray’ open up the evening with an already full Roundhouse with sound reflections of perhaps’ Everything but the Girl’ with a more disco tunes feel with their single released in the summer, ‘Show me more’. The Trio is made up of Poppy Hankin, Iris McConnell and Sophie Moss and after last year’s debut album the new songs offer a more delightful high quality pop R & B soundtrack, dreamy syth pop you can dance to with a feel good factor! You can certainly see the Fan base increasing with this support slot stint with Metronomy an imamate headline tour coming in early 2020.
As soon as Metronomy walk on stage with the strobe lights casting silhouettes on the band members striking posing and the keyboard players wheeling together the bleeps in 1980’s electro style pop, the fans are in for a treat.
The five peace play songs from the’ Metronomy forever’, including ‘Lately’ a song the crowd are already familiar with as they erupt in cheer! Many of the new material is covered in the 21 extravaganza song set in tonight’s sold out show.
Jpseph Mount welcomes everyone and thanks the fans and proclaims proudly,”… this is a first sold out show!” They play old favourites ‘The Bay’ and ‘Corinne’ early on, a homage and nostalgia to early Depeche Mode and Kraftwerk, perhaps, a contrast to the more bouncy, catchy synth laden ‘Insecurity’. The song the crowds jumps up and down to with enthusiastic joy. ‘Salt Water Ice cream’ being one of the more obscure songs played but does stick in one’s head and could easily be a summer festival anthem!
Musically. Tonight’s Metronomy gig is a catchy and memorable one with a genreladen synth pop set which has a fist punching in the air Friday night Party feel to it with the last song being ‘Sex Emoji’, a song maybe something Prince could have concocted together! As The crowd cheer for just one more encore song after ‘Radio Ladio’ is played, Joel’s final words are, “Have a Great time, all of the time”, who knows if ‘Metronmy Forever’ will be repeated to even bigger audiences in the near future!
