NATHANIEL RATELIFF & THE NIGHT SWEATS // O2 ACADEMY, NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE
The soulful R&B group Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats entertain Newcastle with their infectious sound!
★★★★☆
On a cold January night, I couldn’t think of a better way of spending my evening than at Newcastle’s O2 Academy with an almost sold out crowd. The American group from Denver have a sound described as a mix of soulful R&B and folk rock played a cracking show with support from Lion.
Starting the evening off was Lion from London, with her 70s rock influence I was glad I could watch her short set. With influences from the White Stripes and Arctic Monkeys, her set was not to be missed! Lion’s voice and her band sounded incredible, it’s no wonder she’s managed to gain a rapid following. Included in her set were ‘Self Control,’ ‘Oh No’ and ‘Friction’ from her recently released EP. Her act was phenomenal, and I can expect her to be back headlining very soon.
Playing the fourth show of their lengthy tour around Europe there was no shortage of energy, from the get-go the octet was cracking. Front man Nathaniel Rateliff voice was amazing, and his vocal range blew me away. The bond the group have was easily visible, their chemistry was great. Included in their set was a plethora of tracks from their discovery, some examples were fan favourites such as ‘You Worry Me,’ ‘S.O.B,’ ‘I Need Never Get Old’ and ‘Hey Mama.’
Their set blew me away, as someone who’s more into the indie scene however I still really enjoyed their performance. The group are currently touring throughout the rest of the UK and then throughout Europe. I highly recommend you catch them!
