FRENCH INDIE GIANTS PHOENIX PUT ON A COLOURFUL SHOW FOR GLASGOW’S ICONIC VENUE

Starting off the night of synth-pop infused indie tunes and warming up the crowd, were underground heroes The Vegan Leather. With this being possibly the fourth or fifth time I’ve seen these guys, it’s hard to remember a time I haven’t felt myself moving and nodding to the music they play.
Although the venue was under half full at the point of the paisley-rockers set, they still had a good chunk of the audience down the front partying with them as they played their hits such as ‘Shake It’, ‘Eyes’ and latest single ‘I Take American’. They displayed an energetic performance showing they earned this very special support slot.
Taking to the stage at 9 o’clock, starting with opening track from the latest album, ‘J-boy’, the somewhat empty venue gleefully cheered and began dancing to the band before them. As more colours were introduced and covered the Barrowlands stage, it was obvious that this was going to be a show you wouldn’t want to take your eyes off, and this proved true.
As the singer, Thomas Mars, cited some vocal and throat troubles, the crowd were more than keen to help him out as they hit out with a huge favourite in ‘Lisztomania’ the room became more and more lively much to the band’s pleasure.
As interesting as the other members and lighting on stage were, a highlight for me was watching the overly enthusiastic drummer give his drums a real hard time as he smashed and battered them to his heart’s content – a compliment of the highest order. The band continued through their back catalogue and the venue was filled with this party vibe, making it hard to spot any member of the audience not displaying some form of sway or dance in their step.
‘Rome’ closed the set, before Thomas and Christian began the encore coming out just the two of them, under a spotlight. As well as a happy birthday singalong for bassist Deck d’Arcy, as the band sang 1901, Mars made it halfway into the crowd by standing on people’s hands and shoulders, as he took a beer from an audience member, and flew into the final song of the night. A thoroughly entertaining and colourful show from the French band in the perfect venue for a dance party.
