Slayer stop off their world tour finale with a sell-out, ear blistering show at the Glasgow Hydro

Monday saw an unusually early start to proceedings at The Hydro, but with not one but three bands offering support to metal giants Slayer on this tour, they all need time to strut their stuff, and Obituary had the job of kicking off the evening. The death metal pioneers from Florida came on stage around 20 past 6 and rocked the early birds in the venue for 45 minutes. A fine band to start the evening.
Next up were thrash metal legends Anthrax. Hailing from New York, the band were formed in 1981 and have been a regular in the heavy rock music scene since the release of their first album Fistful Of Metal in 1984. Tonights setlist included tracks from their most recent release For All Kings as well as covering an extensive back catalogue. They also threw in a few covers including Cowboys From Hell by Pantera, Got The Time by Joe Jackson and Antisocial by Trust. Their set went down well with the Glasgow crowd.
The evening’s penultimate band were Lamb Of God. From Richmond, Virginia, the band were formerly known as Burn The Priest before changing to LoG. Their setlist tonight would see them cover tracks from throughout their career and set the crowd up perfectly for the headline act. A great set from LoG.
Lastly, and for the last time, thrash metal Lords Slayer take to the Glasgow stage. Formed in 1981 in California, they have been a main stay of hard, thrash metal music. After 37 years of producing music, they have decided to do one last tour, and their Scottish fans haven’t been forgotten.
Entering the arena to Delusions Of Saviour, they carried on with Repentless, Blood Red and Disciple. Having so many fans, and so many tracks in their locker, they could never play a setlist to please everyone, but the big hitters were there. War Ensemble, Payback, Postmortem And Hell Awaits. Each song delivered with the power fans have come to expect.
With an encore of Raining Blood and Chemical Warfare, a backdrop falls and Angel Of Death is played as a tribute to guitarist Jeff Hanneman who died in 2013. The members of the band stay on stage for a few minutes taking the plaudits and thanking the crowd. ‘We’ll miss you Scotland’ says vocalist Tom Araya. Right back at ya, says the Hydro crowd.
