SICK JOY // JIMMY'S, MANCHESTER
SICK JOY PERFORM A INTIMATE SHOW AT MANCHESTER’S JIMMY’S
★★★★★
October: the seasons which brings us pleasant pastel skies, the true changing of leaves, and of course Halloween. But there’s nothing scary about this Friday evening; the evening that Brighton-based Sick Joy cast their spell over Manchester’s own Jimmy’s, bringing fresh faces The C33’s along for the ride.
Having their live debut in their hometown certainly allowed The C33’s to find their element without hesitation. The trio effortlessly float through tracks from their hot-of-the-press EP ‘48 hours at Neon Palms’. With the blissful vocal combination of frontman Cav Green & drummer Judy Jones, the crowd bask in the beauty of ‘Better Luck Next Time, Soul Seeker!’- a track which certainly tickles nostalgia. Drawing the set to a close, you couldn’t help but want more.
Tasting the sweet anticipation in the air, the first date of Sick Joy’s six-long UK tour was lovingly embraced by a full room of fans & friends alike. Punching through the Autumnal air with a gritty, strong introductory riff of brand new single ‘Dissolve Me’ meant bassist Danny Pitson instantly projected his way into every heart. With a sheer velocity of energy, the friendly-faced trio took the stage by storm.
Fireworks of raw, empowering hooks partnered with the cozy bonfire of Mykl Barton’s vocals, continued to not only allure but caress with no sign of letting up. Elegantly guiding us through ‘Cat in a Bird Cage’ no head could resist bobbing along to drummer Martyn Nash’s carefully orchestrated rhythm.
Although enveloping all of the flawless qualities found in giant’s ‘Nirvana’, and fellow three-strong ‘Dinosaur Pile-Up’, Sick Joy really have found their own character and sound. Listening through the ambient live performance of tracks from not only their newly-born debut EP ‘Amateurs’, but also carefully selected fan favourites, we’re really shown a highlight of talent.
With smiles all around the seasonal question of ‘trick or treat?’ was certainly answered. No need for black cats here, Jimmy’s received the biggest treat of them all.
