SAMAS best live act nominees had the unenviable task of opening for The Jesus and Mary Chain but took the crowd and made them their own, a fine set from an immense live act and got the crowd in the mood.
With suitably moody lighting The Jesus And Mary Chain took the stage at the O2 ABC for as close to a hometown gig as they're likely to get. Opening strongly with Amputation from the current album Damage and Joy and following on with Happy When It Rains and Head On, they had the crowd’s full attention with heads bobbing and singing along.
Then the ever-talkative Jim almost apologises for concentrating on tracks from the new album as we see the band entering a more mature phase of their career. The songs are more melodic almost ballad like at times but still interjected with a viscous aural assault when William's lead guitar screeches up to full volume to the delight of the crowd.
As Jim prowls the stage like a caged wounded animal William hides in silhouette against the amps, the brothers Reid have definitely put their riot laden past behind them and found their own niche of dirty, sleazy Rock'n'Roll and throwing in the odd gem from the earlier days does no harm at all with Some Candy Talking and Darklands sounding hauntingly perfect. Bringing the main set to a close with an extended Reverance has the band at their irreverant best.
The encores are taken mainly from the iconic Psychocandy, and the crowd are sent home happy but craving more of that sweet stuff……..Just Like Honey.
