Renowned for their chaotic live shows, Pulled Apart By Horses came to Oxford with new album The Haze behind them supported by Thee MVP’s and Tigercub.
Thee MVP’s buoyed by a recent tour of America opened the show brash guitars and an unrelenting rhythm section. With songs such as Edgar and Funeral, the band will surely progress to larger stages in the future. Despite the smaller crowd due to their early stage time, the band smashed through a short set, warming up those who had arrived early.

Following Thee MVP’s was Tigercub, boasting a much heavier sound than their recorded tracks would hint at. The band, now accustomed to playing to larger audiences following successful UK and European tours played through a short selection of songs from Debut album Abstract Figures in the Dark. The towering figure of the lead singer paused to thank Pulled Apart By Horses for having them on tour before playing their most well known track, Control. Leaving the stage to Born Young and Free by Marmozets, The Grungey bass alongside the melodic vocals should stand the group in good stead.
After the hard hitting supports was Pulled Apart By Horses. The Yorkshire Quartet played a set of 13 songs spanning their entire career to date. The Haze was the first track played, giving the relatively small crowd a taste of what was to come. Crowd favourite I punched a lion in the throat closely followed the opener with harsh vocals and Sabbath esq riffs highlighting how they have become one of the most exciting and unpredictable bands in the scene. The moody overtones of Lizard Baby followed before the promise of Back to the Fuck yeah, a massive tune on record and in the live shows. Cast in Red and Green light, the group went on to coverHelter Skelter producing a soundmore akin to Nirvana than the Beatles. Closing the set was High Five, Swan Dive, Nose Dive, which prompted the lead vocalist, who, following the Nirvana theme, resembled Kurt Cobain to jump the barrier into the crowd, sending those amassed into a frenzy as intense riffs echoed around the room. Storming the pit of Academy 2, he was a perfect example of what Pulled Apart By horses represent in their music in his unlimited energy, encapsulating what it means to go to one of their shows.
