GUN // BARROWLANDS, GLASGOW
Saturday saw a triumphant return to ‘The Barras’ for top Scottish rock band GUN, playing the iconic venue for the 1st time in a few years. Backed by fellow rockers Dirty Thrills and Mason Hill, the evening promised much for the packed Glasgow crowd and they weren’t to be left disappointed.

1st up were London band Dirty Thrills. Lead up front by Louis James (Lead Vocals) and accompanied by Jack Fawdry (Guitar), Steve Corrigan (Drums) and Aaron Plows (Bass), they got the crowd warmed up during their half hour set with tracks from their 2014 self-titled Debut album Dirty Thrills and most recent offering Heavy Living. A great start to a great night’s music.
2nd on the bill were Glaswegian rock outfit Mason Hill. Formed in 2013 by Scott Taylor - Lead Vocals and James Bird - Lead Guitar, they were joined on stage by fellow band members Marc Montgomery – Guitar, Matthew Ward - Bass Guitar and Craig McFetridge – Drums. Their blistering set included some tracks from their highly anticipated debut album, which no doubt will go down well with their already big following. Saturday nights set reassured their legions of followers what they’re capable of, and no doubt gained a lot more fans keen on seeing the band when they return to Glasgow. A very impressive Barrowlands debut by the band and surely won’t be long until they grace the famous stage again on their own right.
And on to the headline, GUN. This was their 1st gig at The Ballroom since December 2015, and the crowd couldn’t wait to get their favourites on stage. Showcasing tracks from their recent release Favourite Pleasures, the current line-up of Dante Gizzi – Vocals, Jools Gizzi – Guitar, Tommy Gentry – Guitar, Andy Carr – Bass and Paul McManus on Drums, ran thru a setlist which included crowd pleasers Don’t Say It’s Over, Money, Taking on the World and their top notch cover of Cameo’s Word Up. Interspersing new tracks with older classics, they finished the main set with the tremendous debut single Better Days and Inside Out from their first album Taking On The World and left the stage with the crowd begging for more after treating us to Steal Your Fire, the 1992 single from the album Gallus.
The band returned after a short oxygen intake to play 2 more tracks from 2017’s Favourite Pleasures, The Boy Who Fooled The World and Take Me Down. All the new tracks were well received from the near sell-out crowd, which clearly signals a return to form for the Glasgow band. They ended the night with the 1990 stormer Shame On You which merged into a cover of The Beastie Boys epic 1986 track (You Gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party).
