The Pigeon Detectives came to Glasgow on a chilly winter evening to celebrate the tenth
anniversary of their album “Wait for Me”. With an excellent line up including Skjor and Little
Comets the O2 ABC was in for an amazing evening of Music.
Young Edinburgh based band Skjor, who are currently supporting Scouting for Girls on the
Scottish leg of their tour, were invited to open the night and did not disappoint on this big
opportunity for the band. Even though they came on early in the night the band impressed,
and by the end of their set the venue was filling up nicely, no doubt they will have gained
some new fans.
Little Comets came on shortly afterwards and hushed the venue with their tight harmonies
and upbeat melodies. They played songs from their new album “Worhead” including
Hunting and A Bientot. The Glasgow crowd were treated to a well-established band as main
support and Little Comets did not fail to impress with well know hits Dancing Song and One
Night in October included in the set, they left the stage to a rapturous applause.
The Pigeon Detectives were last in Glasgow in March. They played at Stereo, a small 300
capacity venue, so this was quite the step up. As the lights went out screams and cries of
excitement rose from the crowd. The band strutted on stage to Phil Collins’ “In the Air
Tonight”. As the intro riff to Romantic Type started the crowd went crazy and it was clear
from the get-go that it was going to be an energetic show. Lead singer Matt Bowman swung
his microphone and leaped around the stage even with his broken foot. Well known hit I
Found Out got the crowd going even more and the first mosh pit of the evening occurred.
As it was the anniversary of the “Wait for Me” album they played the album in full
throughout the evening, and Bowman was very enthusiastic in appreciating the fans for still
be interested ten years later.
During Left Alone the energetic front man started stroking the security guard’s hair which got a lot of laughter from the already enthralled crowd. One thing that was blatantly obvious to the whole crowd was the fact that the techs at the side were very focused on the stage and were ready to sprint on at any minute, to mop up water that Bowman kept throwing around or spitting out his mouth, just to make sure the band were able to keep performing.
You Know I Love You continued the energetic momentum that had ensued from the beginning of their set, and Bowman once again thanked the loyal Glasgow crowd for always showing up and being interactive with the band. He also thanked the NHS for his painkillers which he used as an excuse for forgetting the lyrics and dropping the mic. Stop and Go marked the half way point in the set and was very upbeat and punchy.
As the set continued the crowd took a slight break from the rowdy moshing, but that did not
stop someone throwing a drink at the frontman which narrowly missed his face, and caused
a reaction from Mr Bowman. Take Her Back got the crowd going and screams of “take her
back” rang out around the venue. Wait for Me sent members of the crowd over the barrier
as some of the wilder members of the crowd started to crowd surf. Before the next song
Bowman invited three members of the audience onto the stage, as they were dressed in full
pigeon costumes, and spent the next song on stage dancing around stage with the band.
This is an Emergency rounded of the set with the catchy song making the crowd go crazy
one more time.
The band came back on again and played three more songs to the still expectant audience,
and even though all of their songs are fairly similar the crowd were loving it. Done in Secret,
Everybody Wants me, and I’m Not Sorry rounded of the set and the audience were clearly
thrilled with the evenings performance.
One thing that could be said about the Pigeon Detectives is the fact that they should be a lot
bigger than they are, having been around for ten years and having genuine indie bangers
they have had the opportunity to play bigger venues. So, if ten years later they are only
playing the ABC something hasn’t gone quite right. Despite this the crowd on the evening
did not care one bit about that and thoroughly enjoyed the gig.
