Wiltshire born singer/songwriter Gabrielle Aplin kicked off her UK tour at Glasgow’s iconic Oran Mor following the release of her latest EP “Avalon”. Glitter-glad Aplin bounced on to the stage and started with Sweet Nothing, a hit from her last record, Light Up The Dark in You. She was met with ovation and takes a second to profess her love for the city, take a sip of tea and read us a positive affirmation.
There’s a buzz among the crowd as she plays the opening chords to Panic Cord, a fan favourite from her debut record “English Rain”. Then the song that shot her to stardom in John Lewis’ 2012 Christmas campaign, a cover of Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “The Power of Love”. Aplin definitely delivers with the vocals though they’re difficult to hear over the sound of the typical Glasgow crowd. The energy never drops as she powers through tracks such as “That Girl”, a middle finger to the music industry and extremely relevant in light of recent events, and “Fools Love”.
In between tracks she stops to thank the crowd for their enthusiasm and asks them to dance as she leads into her next song, the title track from her second record, production heavy Light up the Dark in You. The crows doesn’t need any encouragement and Aplin acknowledges this with a smile on her face which is now dripping glitter.
She wraps up her set with her biggest hit and an immense sing-along, “Home”. Before leaving the stage Aplin stops again taking a moment to express her gratitude for Glasgow. Aplin’s success can only continue to grow. Her voice will never be anything but beautiful and her lyrics and musical ability sets her apart within the overcrowded folk-pop genre she is breaking free from with her experimental sound on her stunning new EP, “Avalon”.
