THE 101 // 'LIVING IN A MOVIE' - SINGLE REVIEW

INDIE POP SIX-PIECE THE 101 RELEASE UPBEAT, ANTHEMIC SINGLE 'LIVING IN A MOVIE'

★★★★☆

Despite the relatively young life The 101 have had as a band, it has been one filled with many achievements. The indie sextet have made a considerable name for themselves both on a local and national level, having shared stages with bands such as Fickle Friends, Prides, Fatherson and Gengahr and have received much acclaim for their energetic live shows. Following on from the release of 'Not You But Me' and 'Cliche' last year, the band have returned with their third official single 'Living In A Movie'.

According to the band, 'Living In A Movie' references the troubles that come with coming of age (more of a dark rom-com movie theme then?), the more thoughtful prose contained in the lyrics is contrasted by bright and airy guitar lines from Ross Buchan and Matthew Read, and the occasional 80's era synth for good measure. The influence from contemporaries such as The 1975 and Two Door Cinema Club is very apparent, right until the rather cinematic setting in the pre-chorus breaks up the jaunty funk pop - Dexter Fawcett's vocals smoothly fitting over a mellow piano progression, with a tinge of 1930's strings and sampled spoken word to taste. It's an unusual recipe, but combined with the anthemic chorus that follows, it sure makes an interesting one.

The bouncy, yet melancholic pop of 'Living In A Movie' is well executed for the most part: the band are able to capture a classic funk element within their version of upbeat indie pop, yet still manage to throw in a few stylistic surprises into the fray. With their live performances being hailed and bigger plans for this summer and beyond, The 101 are a name to keep an eye on.
