★★★☆☆ (3.5/5)
Following on from the success of their 2013 debut album 'The Bones of What You Believe' and the 2015 follow up record 'Every Open Eye', the Glaswegian electronic pop trio CHVRCHES have revealed that their third album will be titled 'Love is Dead'. Alongside this announcement - made via Apple's Beats 1 radio station - the band unveiled none other than a collaboration with none other than Matt Berninger of the National, with a track called 'My Enemy'.
'My Enemy' shows a side of CHVRCHES that is in complete contrast to previous single 'Get Out': while 'Get Out' was joyous and full of life; 'My Enemy' is much more restrained, echoing elements of ambient and hip hop in the production and instrumentation. Berninger and CHVRCHES' lead vocalist Lauren Mayberry trade sultry vocals over glitchy drum patterns, shimmering synthesizers and the ever-present vocal samples. The duet format is a logical new concept for CHVRCHES to explore given that Martin Doherty has taken the lead before, and suits the mournful feel of the track.
