TURBOWOLF FT. MIKE KERR (ROYAL BLOOD) // "DOMINO" - SINGLE REVIEW

TURBOWOLF AND MIKE KERR (FROM ROYAL BLOOD) TEAM UP FOR BRAND NEW SINGLE 'DOMINO'

TURBOWOLF - "THIS IS LIFE" - RELEASED 8TH JANUARY 2018

★★★★★

Turbowolf have been the ultimate cult rock band of the last few years. Often presented as somewhat of an enigma by media outlets confused as to what or which style their music takes, the four-piece have enlisted several big-hitting contributors for what could be their breakthrough third effort ‘The Free Life’. Joe Talbot and Sebastian Grainger of Idles and Death from Above respectively have both been confirmed to be featured. However the first of these collaborations to come to light is the alt-punk cut ‘Domino’, featuring none other than Mike Kerr - frontman and bassist of Royal Blood!

Fortunately for music journalists, this time round it’s much easier to figure a Turbowolf track out. ‘Domino’ is a stand out rock track from the get go. The gritty guitar riffs and Lianna Lee Davies’ basslines are infectious, and while Mike Kerr’s contribution can be difficult to pick out on first listen, it feels just a bit more than a thrown together cameo. His and Chris Georgiadis’ vocals combine to create a powerful one-two punch, producing a truly memorable and addictive chorus. Almost as if to dispel suggestions of taking the track in a direction that is more quote unquote, ‘mainstream,’ Turbowolf mix up the formula with an explosive but outright jarring final build up, and a noisey virtuosic breakdown that wouldn’t be too far amiss from a Rage Against the Machine track.

For those who are converted Royal Blood fans, ‘Domino’ is an accessible way into Turbowolf’s diverse and extensive back catalogue. The more hardcore Turbowolf fans will for sure continue to appreciate the fuzz-laden carnage, albeit the somewhat diluted effort on ‘Domino’. Fortunate news for both camps though: Turbowolf is embarking on a headline UK tour in March, before joining Royal Blood as the main support for their US tour in June.

‘The Free Life’ is out March 9th, on SO Recordings/Silva Screen Records.
