THE MODERN RECORD INTERVIEWS.... SAM CALVER

SAM CALVER REVEALS ALL ON HIS NEW SINGLE 'DON'T TELL ME YOU LOVE ME' AND FUTURE PLANS

SAM CALVER

How did you first start out with your music career?

Sam Calver: I started out just playing around all the local pubs and bars in my hometown, gigging and writing as much music as i could.

Your new single ‘Don’t Tell Me You Love Me’ is out now on Island Records. For those reading this who haven’t heard the track, how would you describe it to them?

SC: I always struggle with explaining my sound at the minute… I would say its a mix of electronic soul with heavy bass lines and guitars, and big anthemic choruses.

The precise and heavy use of electronics in your music is very apparent. Do you have any influences on that front, or is it something that has evolved as you’ve progressed with your songwriting?

SC: I've always been a huge fan of music that packs a punch, and The Wildcatz who produced my last EP and single (Don't Tell Me You Love Me) definitely know how to achieve that. They come from a hiphop/dubstep background and were very influential on that scene. They have brought a lot of their flavour in to my recent singles. I'm always trying out new things and experimenting with my sound, electronic music and sampling will always have some influence over my music i think.

The art design for your logo is quite distinctive. Can you tell us a little more about how that came about?

SC: That was actually designed by a friend on our team Oli Collins. We wanted something bold and strong that really stood out but also wanted to keep it quite minimal. He done an awesome job with it, shouts to Oli!

If you could headline any venue, which one would it be?

SC: Madison Square Garden or Red Rocks would be sick. but realistically right now I’ve got my eyes set on Brixton Academy. That's the goal!

What else can your fans expect from the Sam Calver camp for this year?

SC: We’ve got lots more shows to be announced soon as well as lots of new music and some exciting collaborations in the pipeline!

Finally - if you could give your younger self any advice for when you were starting out, what would it be?

SC: Keep gigging and writing as much as possible, don’t drink Jagermeister and get focused!
