Since the easing of restrictions, the music scene has bounced back, and it can be said it’s better than ever! Last weekend, exhibition park was taken over by the biggest festival in Newcastle – This Is Tomorrow. Lasting four days the festival offers fans an all-star lineup while also giving local upcoming artists the opportunity to play to new audiences.

The past 18 months have put a massive strain on the NHS, causing key workers to be under even more pressure to do the amazing work that they do. As a reward, the This Is Tomorrow organisers put on a free gig for them to attend and they certainly did!

The line up was packed with talent including Zuzu, The National Anthems, Jango Flash, Cruel Hearts Club, Lightning Seeds and James.

Local band The National Anthems put on a great show on the Richard Hamilton Stage with lead singer Jon Corbett really rallying up the large crowd that gathered. They played a range of their own songs and some popular covers including Oases. They were the perfect band to get fans in the mood to watch the Lightning Seeds.

The Liverpudlian band were one of the headliners and after a summer of England being on our TV screens, fans were keen to hear ‘Three Lions’ played live.. despite football not coming home! They opened up their set with ‘Marvellous’, ‘Sense’ and ‘Change’, all of which got the crowd well up for the rest of the evening. They closed with the famous ‘Three Lions’, which you could have probably heard from Sunderland the crowd were singing it that loud back at them.

Between Lightning Seeds and James were another Liverpool based band, Zuzu. Having seen them live pre pandemic I was really excited to see them play live again. Their set was full of energy and that had a huge influence on the crowd. They played their new single ‘The Van Is Evil’ along with some of their older stuff including arguably their best song ‘All Good’, which they closed their set with.

Last up was James and boy did he make an entrance! Coming onto stage with baggy trousers, a really cool wool jumper and beanie. The band who really took off in the 90’s were still performing to the levels they did back then. Opening his set with songs new and old, one being ‘Isabella’ from his latest album and then classics such as ‘Born Of Frustration’ and ‘Ring The Bells’ from the 90’s. Having seen them at Kendal Calling in 2012, they were as good as I remember and clearly the crowd felt the same as they sang along to every word. He bounced and danced around the stage all night, one particular highlight being when he danced theatrically whilst his guitarist and backing singer sang to him. He ended the set with ‘Sit Down’, ‘Getting Away With It’ and ‘Come Home’.
