FIESTA X FOLD FESTIVAL 2018 - KELVINGROVE PARK, GLASGOW

As the hot weather truly rampaged through Glasgow this late June, so did Nile Rodgers and his brigade of vintage legends and modern ground-breakers who took a mature crowd through a time machine for the ears.

This year’s event, in the picturesque Kelvingrove Park in the busy west end of Glasgow, struck it lucky when it returned amongst some of the hottest weather conditions the city has seen in decades. Continuing in the tradition of the last Fiesta, Chic played headline performances on both nights, while Chic frontman and event co-ordinater, Nile Rodgers, also appeared on many other artist sets across the two stages and showed his support and appreciation for the other performers and the sun blushed crowd.

The festival’s Saturday line-up contained classic soul acts, featuring the stunning tones and excitement of the Pointer Sisters; the upbeat rhythms of the headliners Earth, Wind and Fire; Chic, who, of course, were making everybody dance; and vibes that only Roy Ayers knows how to command. Craig Charles, despite heat that could be described as brutal, boosted the audience to shake their hips. Mr Charles, leading by example, was, of course, bopping and bouncing along with every second of his performance. De La Soul lead the crowd into the evening with a top notch hip-hop performance continued when De La Soul’s own DJ Maeso took to the Block Party Stage to fuel the fire they had started among the fans.

Rescheduling issues caused a slightly chaotic impression matched with also distinct technical difficulties on the Sunday definitely let down the weekend. Scissor Sister’s vocalist, Ana Matronic, unfortunately pulled out of the event last minute, making way for the decisions to move acts between stages which caused confusion and disruption the flow of the schedule. However, Sunday still featured many highlighting performances. Morcheeba held her own, on stage in a long kilted dress, at one point coving Bowie, and getting the crowd to their feet.

Laura Mvula’s smoothly tones set the atmosphere for the beats ahead. Electronic pop sensation Goldfrapp, cranked out the hits in sweltering weather and the park became alive with the unique sound of their synth-pop. Emili Sande vocally stunned the crowd with her inspiring performance and chart topping hits. Remix extraordinaire, The Reflex pulled out impressive versions of classic tracks; although, his set was cut substantially short, due to the spread of the crowd, heavily disappointing the fans. Chic performance may have slight sound issues that hadn’t been present the previous evening; though they still kept the energy up high, playing hit after hit.

2018’s Glasgow Fiesta featured a line up filled with gems and weather that seemed too good to be Scottish, though the event was not without its flaws. The event set up featured frequent water points, toilets and a variety of food stalls, despite this however there was apparent issues for attendees who found themselves caught up in very long facility cues.
