liam gallagher // main stage // 9:30pm

Look out at the sea of faces at a Liam Gallagher show and you’ll see just how he has become an iconic figure for two generations of fans. You’ll see couples who have been to every Oasis and Liam tour since they first heard his signature snarl declaring “I need to be myself.” You’ll spot groups of young lads who not only weren’t even born in the ‘90s, but who would’ve been toddlers when Oasis signed off with 2008’s ‘Dig Out Your Soul’. But regardless of the demographic, they’re all unified in the moment: arms in the air and voices hollering to the heavens as Liam tears through anthems old and new.

RENEE RAPP // MAIN STAGE // 3:40PM

Reneé Rapp knew she was born to perform ever since she was a child. Even in her earliest memories, her love of music was always present. “I couldn’t sit still in the car unless there was music,” she says. “Otherwise, I would cry the entire time.” The North Carolina native began harnessing her natural creativity by writing and recording songs when she was just a teenager. Eventually, her career took off when she landed the coveted role of Regina George in the Tony-nominated Mean Girls musical on Broadway. Shortly after, she found widespread recognition and praise—from the likes of W, Harper’s Bazaar, and The Hollywood Reporter for her performance as Leighton on the HBO Max series The Sex Lives of College Girls written by Mindy Kaling.

Rapp then turned her attention back to music, sharing her threadbare insecurities on debut single “Tattoos.” Since then, her songs have caught on like wildfire with listeners. The multi-hyphenates entire debut headline tour sold out in a matter of minutes, her inspiring single “Too Well” has impacted the Top 40, and her discography has amassed over 200 million streams and counting. Not only that, she will be reprising the role of Regina George in the forthcoming Paramount+ feature adaptation of the Broadway musical Mean Girls. Rapp’s 2022 debut EP Everything to Everyone, as well as its deluxe edition, firmly established her pop staying power, while her forthcoming debut LP, Snow Angel, is primed to fully showcase the hitmaker’s vulnerable approach to song writing and stunning vocal range.

crawlers // main stage // 1:40pm

Every so often, a new band arrives that feels important; like they’re about to mean something to so many. Liverpool’s CRAWLERS are just that – a group built not just on an undeniable ability to write exciting and eclectic rock songs, but an empathetic passion that fuels them to stand up, speak out and open their arms to anyone in need of a safe space and community.

Since their inception, CRAWLERS have been putting the work in, gigging across Merseyside, working on their songwriting and steadily building an impressive following on social media that is often hard to come by for unsigned bands. The latter has been an essential tool for the group, who already have over 650k followers on TikTok. Holly’s knowledge of social media helped them plug their gigs and releases effectively online, opening up new opportunities for the band.

No matter how many people are listening, using their platform is something that remains at the heart of what CRAWLERS want to do with the band. “It’s really hard to find a safe space – especially for young people, queer people, and other misrepresented or underrepresented groups – and being able to do that with our platform is something we’re looking forward to exploring and breaking new boundaries with.”

CORELLA // MAIN STAGE // 12:50PM

It’s a universally accepted truth that music brings people together. That was certainly the case with Manchester-formed band Corella, who are now intent on creating unity through their own inspiring, anthemic songs.

Comprising frontman Joel, bassist/vocalist Ben, guitarist Jack and drummer James, the pop-rock group formed while its members–all hailing from northern towns–were in their first year of university studying music. They met after being placed in the same university halls, bonding over their shared love of indie bands such as Foals and Two Door Cinema Club, along with classic pop and rock including The Beatles, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and Dire Straits

THE LUKA STATE // MAIN STAGE - 12:00PM

Hailing from Winsford, on the outskirts of Manchester, The Luka State are doing gritty rock ‘n’ roll their own way. Fronted by Conrad Ellis, the four-piece’s debut album ‘Fall In Fall Out’ turned heads with its blend of catchy choruses and big riffs, even in the midst of a pandemic.

Now, their latest release ‘More Than This’ hits even harder, tackling issues like mental health, love, and societal neglect. “Music has always been therapy for me,” says Conrad Ellis, and it shows. These guys aren’t just making music – they’re spreading a message.

“No one out there should feel alone. There’s a way through everything, and we can do it together.”

ashnikko // bbc radio 1 stage // 7:10pm

Ashnikko’s songs are like portals. You’re instantly transported to a hyper, horny, whimsical universe where emotions are dramatised, gender stereotypes are disrupted, and revenge reigns supreme. From the demonic brat rap of early singles like “Halloweenie” and “STUPID (ft. Yung Baby Tate)” to the lurid alt-pop of viral hits “Daisy” and “Slumber Party (ft. Princess Nokia)”, an ever-evolving sound is anchored by a cheeky humour and subversive personality that couldn’t belong to anyone else. While DEMIDEVIL showcased a more head-on approach, directly tackling themes of sexual revolution and revenge, her debut album WEEDKILLER is more allegorical, steering towards liberation and persevering through the dark to reach the inevitable light.

good neighbours // bbc radio 1 stage // 1:50pm

A band born out of small towns and spare time. Scott and Oli have neighbouring studios at their building in East London and first began making music for the project together out of the desire to make something positive and unpolished in a scene where most music felt quite mellow and intimate. Throughout 2023, they consistently began making music for the love of making music, and only midway through the year decided to create the band to release under. With an urge to rekindle the early 2000s scene of Passion Pit / MGMT etc, Good Neighbours nod to classic song writing and raucous production, inspired by A24, friendship, and a cinematic approach to music.

festival republic stage

the japanese house // festival republic stage // 9:45pm

“I know I shouldn’t need it but I want affection / I know I shouldn’t want it but I need attention, ”sings Amber Bain–AKA UK musician The Japanese House–on “Touching Yourself”, a sad and sexy pop-leaning earworm about desire and heartbreak. Much of second album In the End It Always Does is contradictory like this: beginnings and endings, obsession and mundanity, falling in love and falling apart. It’s the perfect circular portrait of a relationship–with others, with herself, with an experience–hence the simple, circular album cover.

Written during a creative burst at the end of 2021,In the End It Always Does is primarily inspired by the events preceding it–including Bain’s first time moving to Margate, being in a throuple and the slow dissolution of those relationships. “[These two people] were together for six years and I met them and then we all fell in love at the same time–and then one of them left,” Bain’s remembers. “It was a ridiculously exciting start to a relationship. It was this high… And then suddenly I’m in this really domestic thing, and it’s not like there was other stuff going on–it was lockdown.”

rachel chinouriri // festival republic stage // 7:35pm

The critical success of 2021’s Four° in Winter EP marked out her capabilities as a stylistic amalgamator, praised across the likes of BBC Radio 1, The Guardian, Dazed, NME, and theneedledrop’s Anthony Fantano who named the EP his #1 project of 2021.

matt maltese // festival republic stage // 6:40pm

Everybody is searching for happiness – and although it might be impossible to find, Matt Maltese is getting closer. For his fourth album, in order to look forward the musician finally let himself look back to the past. Reflecting on a sense of place, the meaning of where you grew up and the secret to being able to just enjoy the moment, ‘Driving Just To Drive’ finds Maltese at his most free.

Album cycles have long defined his life – the 25-year-old’s growth can be mapped in tandem with his music, and it’s only with this record that the young man is finding peace between past and present, and slowly better becoming himself. “‘Bad Contestant’ was someone I wanted to keep up with rather than just me,” Maltese says of his 2018 debut, a record he holds close to his heart and wanted to channel with his most recent release. A rewilding, of sorts.

The record finds Maltese at his most open, and settled, embracing new sounds but returning to the most organic version of himself he knows. He’s always wanted to find a way to make people laugh, but finds ways here to charm while somewhat letting his guard down. The result is something bittersweet and deeply, authentically emotional.  Since his second album, 2020’s ‘Krystal’, Maltese has “felt a pull of earnestness being like, ‘Come over here.’” What a pleasure that ‘Driving Just To Drive’ finds the artist fully surrendered, curled up and honest with that feeling at last.

With three releases under her belt and plenty to come, Alessi has already developed a die-hard growing fanbase; within the first hour of launching a fan Whatsapp community, so many fans joined that the group began crashing, while fans have also created their own Discord server and multiple groups across Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat. BRIT-nominated DJ/producer Nathan Dawe is one of the UK’s biggest breakout dance acts of the last five years. Buoyed by a huge fan base in Birmingham and the Midlands, Nathan’s regional transmits nationwide – as evidenced by a series of standout UK Top 10 singles.

From BRIT-nominated UK #3 single ‘Lighter’ ft. KSI to 2022’s UK #9 summer anthem ’21 Reasons’ ft. Ella Henderson, Nathan has established himself as a bonafide and definitive dance artist. Further collaborations with everyone from Little Mix to Anne-Marie to Joel Corry & Ella Henderson on 2023 summer smash, ‘O800 HEAVEN’, also continue to showcase his fluid and versatile approach to music-making.

If that wasn’t enough, Nathan has also earned a host of different accolades over the last three years. In January 2021, he was crowned MTV’s Push Artist for 2021 for example, holding off competition from the likes of Griff, Arlo Parks and Pa Salieu, and was later also made an official ambassador of Aston Villa FC’s Academy – the football team he’s supported since he was a boy.
