Here are our must see Artists/Bands at THIS IS TOMORROW 2019:
FRIDAY 24TH MAY
FOALS:
21:00-22:30hrs : Main Stage
Foals are recognised as one of the top acts within the UK due to their success, award nominations and winning the Q award for best live act, 2013. Their 2008 debut album Antidotes featured hit singles such as ‘Cassius’ and ‘Olympic Airways’, while their second album Total Life Forever brought us the euphoric track ‘Spanish Sahara’ which was labelled the ‘hottest track in the world’ during its premiere on BBC Radio 1, 2010. Three years later, we were greeted with Holy Fire, gifting us with the widely loved singles ‘my number’ and ‘inhaler’. The album became number two on the UK Albums chart and was nominated for best album for the Mercury Prize.
Foals have recently announced a two-part album that they have been working on since 2017, set to be released in March and August this year. Two singles have been released so far, ‘on the luna’ and ‘exits’. Their new music takes on an electronic twist, incorporating synthesisers and a twisted picture on surveillance in the world. Foals never fail to excite the industry of indie rock and their new album has everybody on the edge of their seats.
YOU ME AT SIX:
19:30-20:30hrs : Main Stage
When You Me At Six gathered together to begin the process of writing their new album, the classic-sounding Night People, they set up a whiteboard in their London studio. On it, along with the 50+ songs they wrote for the project, they listed the considerable achievements they’ve notched up since forming as teenagers in Weybridge, Surrey, in 2004. The list included: playing Ally Pally, Wembley Arena, and The O2; scoring two Top Five albums (2010’s Hold Me Down, 2011’s Sinners Never Sleep) and a Number One album (2014’s Cavalier Youth), and taking 13 consecutive singles onto the Radio 1 A-list. Now, a decade into their career, the five friends who form You Me At Six – frontman Josh plus Max Helyer (guitar), Chris Miller (guitar), Matt Barnes (bass) and Dan Flint (drums) – are focused on the serious business of becoming Britain’s biggest and best rock band.
“We're not sitting there saying we want to be the next Coldplay musically, but do we want to headline Wembley Stadium four nights in a row and headline Glastonbury? Yeah. Fuck yeah, we do. I look at Biffy Clyro, Bring Me The Horizon, Tame Impala, Arctic Monkeys, Foals, all these bands who are having their moment and trying to become the new headliners, and we believe it’s our turn next. I want to watch our band blow up.”
Their most recent album is VI, that was released at the end of 2018. You Me At Six will certainly put on a dramatic show and rock the stage to create a performance like no other at This is Tomorrow festival. Don’t miss out!
NOTHING BUT THIEVES:
18:00-19:00hrs : Main Stage
In an era where tracks are produced by committee and honed by focus groups, Nothing But Thieves are a rare beast indeed – a band with the talent, integrity and vision to create heartbreakingly beautiful music entirely on their own terms. Nothing But Thieves’ origins lie in schoolmates Conor (vocals), Joe (guitar) and Dave’s (drums) efforts in a variety of bands in their hometown of Southend, Essex.
Inspired by artists as diverse as Ray Charles and Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters and Arcade Fire, they gained valuable experience on the local live circuit, even if they weren’t going to change the world. Nothing but Thieves have grown massively with success since their debut album in 2015. It reached no.7 on the UK Album chart and reached no.3 on iTunes, kickstarting their flourishing music career. They released an EP in 2018 titled What did you think when you made me this way? with the single ‘forever and ever more’. That these boys are writing material of such maturity and sophistication while barely out of their teens is astonishing. That they’re doing it all outside the traditional music business framework is even more impressive still. The alternative rock band are definitely going to live up to their expectations that they have set in the past few years, and the anticipation is selling tickets quickly!
ANTEROS:
19:30-20:00hrs : The Richard Hamilton Stage
Anteros take their name from the Greek god of requited love, the perfect moniker for a band whose buzzy indie-pop is this easy to fall for. Coming up at a time when guitar music is once again in rude health from Shame and IDLES to Wolf Alice, this London-based four-piece boast influences that range from Blondie to Brandon Flowers, Motown to disco. “We sound like tequila mixed with bananas and a bit of cinnamon”, jokes frontwoman Laura Hayden, a half-Spanish, half-British tour de force and former MTV Spain VJ who helms this self-proclaimed “travelling circus” alongside Harry Balazs, Josh Rumble and Jackson Couzens. The last few years have seen this young outfit hit the road with the likes of Two Door Cinema Club and White Lies, open Glastonbury’s Other Stage, and gain major radio support, garnering the approval of tastemakers including Annie Mac and Phil Taggart. In print, they’ve also been hotly tipped by the Guardian and the Independent, with alt-rock bible DIY noting that they “turn sorrow into something you can dance to”. And, as they prepare to release their debut album, it’s easy to see why so many are already under their spell.
Whether during their electric live shows or on record, Anteros strike the perfect balance of deeper themes and varied grooves you can’t help but move to. And it seems they have no plans to change their eclectic ways any time soon. “We don’t want to get too comfortable”, adds Hayden with a laugh. “Otherwise it would get boring. We want to make our own space”. And, as they continue to craft it with class, we’re sure to be lending Anteros our hearts as well as our ears.
BAD SOUNDS:
20:30-21:00hrs : The Richard Hamilton Stage
Formed by two brothers in 2015, Bad sounds have grown dramatically since their debut single ‘I feel’, which already received admiration from everyone and began the growth of their massive fanbase. Their renowned wild performances always result in an epic show, and with popular singles such as ‘are you high?’ from 2017, and their latest singles ‘get better’ and ‘how are you gonna lose?’ it is definitely going to be a night to remember.
“Bad Sounds have become known for bringing an effervescent energy (featuring balloons and confetti cannons galore) to their live shows — and these horn-blasted indie tracks will shine in their performances. With this new release proving even more inventive than their previous material, we can safely say that Bad Sounds = good times.” – Clash Magazine 2018
THE PALE WHITE:
17:00-17:30hrs : Main Stage
The Pale White are a three piece indie rock band from Newcastle, UK. Comprised of brothers Adam (Lead Vocals, Guitar) and Jack Hope (Drums), and long time friend Tom Booth (Bass), the trio have fast been gaining attention for their signature melodic guitar work, thunderous rhythm section and magnetic live shows.
Across a series of early singles, the band have continued to gain high profile support from the likes of NME, Radio X, Apple Music, MTV, Amazing Radio and BBC Introducing, and after securing BBC Introducing’s Track Of The Week, the band were invited to play stages at Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds.
With a five star live review from The Independent comparing them to US rock royalty Queens Of The Stone Age, the groups reputation as an unmissable live act has started to spread. Opening for the likes of The Amazons, Twin Atlantic, The Libertines, Sam Fender and Band of Skulls, the band are developing a passionate word of mouth following as one of the most exciting new British bands.
With new release “Medicine”, produced by Jolyon Thomas (Royal Blood, Slaves), the band usher in a new chapter with their most accomplished offering yet and a bold statement of things to come.
KAWALA:
18:30-19:00hrs : The Richard Hamilton Stage
Starting their musical journey while studying in Leeds, North London duo Jim (vocals) and Dan (acoustic guitar, vocals) quickly developed a distinctive sound. Deriving from their joint love of close vocal harmony, and rhythmic finger-style acoustic guitar, the pair started writing songs inspired by the likes of Bombay Bicycle Club and Half Moon Run.
After breaks on platforms such as Mahogany sessions as an acoustic indie-folk act, they quickly moved back to London with aim of expanding their sound. Now signed to Mahogany Records and backed by a full band of Ben (drums), Reeve (bass) and Dan Lee (electric guitar), KAWALA have started making waves in the live scene, finding inspiration from a range of musical styles.
The sound has developed through the use of afrobeat-esque drums, atmospheric electric hooks and strong rhythmic bass, yet still maintaining the focus on the core indie-folk two part vocal and acoustic.
WILD FRONT:
16:30-17:00hrs : The Richard Hamilton Stage
Wild Front are renowned for their unique sound due to the four members having very different musical influences before forming as a band. From classical music to hip hop, their backgrounds differ greatly, and yet the sound that they produce together is somewhat incredible. Wild Front have performed at many festivals over the summer such as Truck festival, Common People, Isle of Wight, Reading and Leeds and many others.
Their most popular song ‘Rico’, released in 2016, received praise and their latest single ‘Make You Feel’ was released in 2018 as a precursor from their upcoming album launch this year.
AVALANCHE PARTY:
20:00-20:30hrs : BBC Introducing Stage
Avalanche Party is feral garage-punk from the wild North Yorkshire Moors, hopped up on adrenalin and amphetamines. Their sound is intense and immediate, so new yet so familiar and brimming with an urgency that explodes off the stage like the front lines of a war you didn’t even realise was being fought. Every note played through white knuckles, every word spat through gritted teeth. The beats blast like cannons while the guitars stampede like spooked stallions surging ever onward, snorting, snarling and tearing apart everything in their path.
The past year has seen Avalanche Party tear away from the moors, raising venues all around the UK and Europe to the ground with intense live performances. Hotly tipped by many for big success the band has had heavy radio support, being championed by BBC Introducing, Radio1’s Huw Stephens, 6Music’s Steve Lamacq and Tom Robinson, Vic Galloway at BBC Scotland, John Kennedy at Radio X, Edith Bowman at Virgin Radio, Jim Gellatly, Amazing Radio and KCRW’s Jason Kramer and KEXP’s Shannon Sauter in the USA. The band have also recorded two live sessions for BBC 6Music.
BARE ROOTS:
15:45-16:15hrs : The Richard Hamilton Stage
Hailing from the working-class suburbs of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK), BARE ROOTS combine 80s soundscapes with 90s soulful rock and roll. The band was formed by school mates Anthony Francis (vocals, guitar), Joe Anderson (bass) and Martin Corkhill (drums) who later joined forces with Ollie Petrie (guitar).
Their debut single ‘Ride the Wave’ is a timely exploration of contemporary working-class culture recorded and produced in the band’s DIY home studio. Lyrically, the track will resonate with those who feel disillusioned with a monotonous or unrewarding 9 to 5. The song materialised when frontman Anthony Francis encountered countless people actively pursuing fulfilling careers whilst working the bar in a Newcastle hotel. Its dynamic structure and rousing, punchy chorus, however, ensure the track remains ultimately hopeful in its outlook.
BARE ROOTS set out to make a statement with ‘Ride The Wave’ which draws influences from bands like Pearl Jam and The War On Drugs, with a firm emphasis placed on homegrown values and the importance of self-worth.
CALLUM PITT:
17:00-17:30hrs : BBC Introducing Stage
Taking influences from The War On Drugs, Bon Iver and Fleet Foxes, indie-folk newcomer Callum Pitt combines finger-picked folk riffs with a stunning falsetto voice. His debut track, “You’d Better Sell It While You Can”, received airplay from BBC Introducing and Amazing Radio, as well as gathering widespread blog coverage from the likes of Crack In The Road, DIY and The Tipping Point, resulting in a place on one of Spotify UK’s ‘Fresh Finds’ playlists, a slot at Evolution Emerging 2017, and tour support slots with Meadowlark, Cape Cub and Isaac Gracie. Follow up tracks 'Least He's Happy' and 'Rabbits' received yet more coverage, making Spotify's coveted "New Music Friday" playlist in a number of countries, and saw Callum receive his first BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6 Music plays.
“[A] brilliant introduction to a young talent with bags of potential, massive in scope and freely channelling the dreamy Americana of The War On Drugs and Bon Iver’s sparkling clean production in its rich ambient soundscapes... It’s an evolving piece of uplifting indie folk that eventually explodes into an anthemic payoff that’s worth the wait.” (God Is In The TV)
A FESTIVAL, A PARADE:
17:30-18:00hrs : The Richard Hamilton Stage
A Festival, A Parade are arguably the most avant-garde alternative band Newcastle. 2019 could be the biggest year for the band yet. At the start of this year they played a sold out show at Sage Gateshead and this spring they are supporting BRIT Award winner Sam Fender for the second time.
The band are currently working on new material in the wake of the release of their 2018 EP ‘Stay Away From Me’.
SATURDAY 25TH MAY
NOEL GALLAGHER’S HIGH FLYING BIRDS:
21:00-22:30hrs : Main Stage
Newcastle’s This is Tomorrow festival is proud to announce a Saturday night headline performance from multiple award winner Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. The emergence of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds in 2011 marked the beginning of Oasis’ guitarist solo career.
The album release was incredibly successful leading to 2.5 million worldwide sales and reaching number one in the UK album charts. Noel Gallagher’s most recent album Who Built The Moon?, received positive reception and with hit singles such as ‘Holy Mountain’ makes us excited for what Noel Gallagher has in store for the future. Rumours have speculated that his new album is already in production, featuring a mix between The Police and The Cure. Noel has also spoken out with wishes to collaborate with Morrissey in the future.
THE VACCINES:
19:30-20:30hrs : Main Stage
Formed in 2010 in West London, The Vaccines uploaded a demo of 'If You Wanna' to YouTube and almost immediately, DJs such as Radio One's Zane Lowe were praising the track. They then released their debut album ‘What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?’ just a year later. In January 2011, they were announced as being the artist in the BBC's Sound of 2011 poll. That same week, they appeared on the cover of NME magazine for the first time, before embarking on the NME Awards tour with Crystal Castles.
Moreover, Combat Sports is the sound of The Vaccines at their best. Released in 2018, their fourth album is the sound of one of the defining British rock and roll bands of their generation at full throttle, setting aside pop experiments and concentrating on what caused the rabid excitement at their arrival in 2010. Combat Sports is a record of guitars, of brevity, of speed, of breathless excitement.
“We rediscovered who we were and what kind of band we wanted to be,” says singer, songwriter and rhythm guitarist Justin Young. “We wanted to make a record to solidify that in our minds, and the minds of other people. And, of course, we wanted to make the best record we’ve ever made.”
From pure Vaccines rock and roll (Put It on a T-Shirt, I Can’t Quit, Surfing In The Sky) through to powerpop (Out in the Street, which was inspired by Big Star, and Take It Easy, which came from listening to Dwight Tilley and Tom Petty) Combat Sports a record that defiantly reasserts the Vaccines’ case to be one of the great English rock bands of their time.

Editors have remained as one of the UK’s most dynamic acts since bursting onto the scene in 2005 with their Mercury Prize Nominated debut album ‘The Back Room’. Early tracks such as ‘Munich’, ‘Papillon’ and ‘Smokers Outside the Hospital Doors’ proved that the band could not only please critics but also put on a rousing live show.

These factors have made the band an influential force in Scottish music and have inspired many a successor.
While 2018 was a landmark year for Glasvegas, marking ten years since the release of their self-titled debut album, 2019 is expected to be another stellar time for the band who will be releasing a new album.

Inhaler featured in last year's lineup for Dublin’s New Years Festival.
THE SNUTS:
16:30-17:00hrs : The Richard Hamilton Stage
The rise of The Snuts has been rapid but inevitable thanks to their cocksure swagger and indie rock belters. News of the band first spread via word of mouth in their native Scotland. However, the secret couldn't be kept for long thanks to a UK tour late last year.
With each live appearance The Snuts win over more and more fans and This Is Tomorrow will be no exception.
LAURA HIBBERD:
15:30-16:00hrs : The Richard Hamilton Stage
Lauran Hibberd sure isn’t the shy, retiring type. She has a raw, tongue in cheek as seen on her first single of 2019 ‘Sugardaddy’ and her playfully taunting ‘What Do Girls Want?’
FEVA:

The lads in Newcastle band Baltic may only be young but they have already performed at multiple festivals and played a sold out show at Think Tank? Underground and have supported Pete Doherty.

Stereophonics provide a sound and experience that is like no other, and will be enlightening Newcastle this May.

His songs are timeless and weave bitter-sweet pop and folk melodies with lush harmonies. His idiosyncratic lyrics tell stories, jokes, and poke sticks into wasps’ nests. Mano’s distinctive voice can deliver punches, one-liners and arrows to the heart, with a wry, distinctly northern warmth.
Using intimate home recordings as a foundation, Mano has been joined by drummer and producer Tim Thomas, bass player Gary Hadfield and Billy Marsden on clarinet to add lush harmonies alongside banjo,, harmonica, omnichord and mellotron. This is an album full of warmth, wit, and humanity, produced with unassuming subtlety and charm.
