Renowned for his vocals, Dean once again demonstrated how his gravel-flecked voice thrives in a live setting. The audience thrived on the stagecraft exhibited, as Dean prowled the stage with undeniable charisma.
The night’s set consisted mostly of tracks from Dean’s latest album with a collection of his biggest hits from his back catalogue included for good measure. Stompers like “Duck Tape Heart” complimented wistful songs such as “Real Real” as the band delivered a flawless performance with delivered densely packed sound. Seamlessly transitioning between rugged acoustic sounds and heavy rockers created a dynamic experience through the night which kept the audience engaged throughout.
The lament of “Heavens to Betsy” is a common standout of Dean’s shows, and tonight was no exception. As the regret-filled lyrics of the verses gave way to a soaring chorus. The emotion of the performance captured the audience fully, with their choir-like singing showing why this track has garnered such attention since its release. A cover of the Fred Eaglesmith track “49 Tons” delivered one of the heaviest moments of the night as Dean and the band let loose a blast of energy, with searing guitar solos battling the muscular rumblings of the rhythm section.
Dean and his band delivered a performance rich in electrifying musicianship, rugged storytelling and captivating vocals. The evening showed why Dean cultivates a reputation as one of the most compelling performers in country music. In between songs, he took time to share stories, jokes and thanks. His gratitude was palpable and the audience returned the energy tenfold.
Closing the main set with the Yellowstone hit “Don’t Come Looking”, a powerful blues guitar riff led a rapturous sing-along during the chorus. Ending the night was the reflective “Another Century”, an ode to life and the future, this served as a perfect closing note to end the evening.
As the crowds dissipated into the night, words of admiration and adoration could be heard praising Dean’s performance. With stellar live shows and a catalogue of quality tracks, Jackson Dean is set to go from strength to strength.
