PASSENGER BRINGS HIS “ALL THE LITTLE LIGHTS:
ANNIVERSARY TOUR” TO VANCOUVER’S ORPHEUM THEATER.
★★★★★ (5/5)
Passenger’s All The Little Lights Anniversary tour came to a close in Vancouver, at a sold-out Orpheum Theatre. A seasoned and poised Passenger took the stage after a solid and entertaining opening set from Seattle-based SYML; a fitting opener for the one-man show that nearly 2700 fans had come to see.
As he took the stage to open with the title track, ‘All The Little Lights’, it became clear that despite being the only one on stage, the room was entirely on board with everything he did. In between songs, he entertained with his stories of busking, growing up, and heartache. He even went so far as to make light of his smash-hit ‘Let Her Go’ being his only big song, and the commonly occurring confusion between it and Frozen’s ‘Let It Go’; noting a great deal of “upset 11-year olds realising I’m not Elsa”.
The crowd laughed at all the right moments, yet fell incredibly silent in respect for his ode to loss, ‘Queenstown’, which transitioned seamlessly into the age-old classic, ‘The Sound of Silence’.
The crowd got to their feet and joined in for the catchy chorus of ‘I Hate’, an ironically cheerful song exploring the peculiarities and pet peeves of everyday life. ‘Wild Love’ came next, dedicated to Mike’s partner Rebecca, a wholesome tune capturing the feeling of being madly in love.
The moment everyone was waiting for - the all too familiar guitar opening to ‘Let Her Go’ took over the room, all 2000+ fans singing along. As the song ended, he raised a glass in thanks and was reciprocated by a standing ovation and smattering applause.
‘Scare Away The Dark’ continued the crowd choir, as Passenger left the stage momentarily, the crowd kept singing. The surreal moment turned into applause as the man of the hour returned to close the night with ‘Things That Stop You Dreaming’, ‘Boomerang’, and ‘Holes’.
It’s clear Passenger hasn’t missed a beat. He held the respect, awe, and attention of the crowd the whole night; and he’s certainly not done making music anytime soon.
