In the summer light of Friday, thousands made their way to Victoria Park to see LCD Soundsystem open the second weekend of All Points East alongside a lineup which assembled some of the best in alternative rock and dance music.

Support was varied across the day, with various genres represented across the lineup of acts that filled the All Points East stages. Performances from the likes of Jockstrap and Floating Points represented the electronic influences of the headliners.

While the rock ancestry was represented by the likes of 90’s mainstays the Pixies, who managed to deliver a masterclass in alt-rock to the packed east stage. Through such staples as “Hey” and “Here Comes Your Man”, the band were effectively able to maintain the momentum of their set. Of course, the iconic “Where is My Mind?” received the largest response from the thousands-strong audience with the song’s absurdist lyrics and acoustic riff resonating as strong as ever.

Excitement was built as the time slot for headliner LCD Soundsystem got closer. The band took to the stage with the funk stylings of “Us Vs Them”. Their lowkey entrance did little to dampen the audience's excitement as the assembled thousands danced to the influential blend of electronic rock. The refrain “The time has come” served as a powerful statement.

The set list covered their various albums, particularly focussing on the classic “Sound of Silver” and “This is Happening”.

As the performance drove on, it became clear that the sound quality did little to help the band communicate their sound. With the vocals and instruments becoming difficult to distinguish, even at low volumes. However, once the band found their footing, there was little that could throw them off as they delivered a constant stream of dance-rock hits.

Throughout, the audience was jubilant and in high spirits. Driving drumbeats on many tracks kept the crowd's feet moving.

The band dedicated the song “Someone Great” to their departed friend Justin Chearno. It was a touching moment which perfectly demonstrated the emotional power the group still possess.

On melancholy favourite “New York I Love You But You’re Bringing Me Down” the band waltzed through the smokey jazz lounge croon.

Ending on the archetypal “All My Friends” saw the band in their element as the audience twirled and jived to the hyperactive beat.

LCD Soundsystem’s stellar headline set capped off a fantastic day which left the thousands who packed out Victoria Park utterly elated.
