Andrea Bocelli needs no introduction to fans of classical music. His records have sold millions of copies across the world and he has played some of the largest stages in the world to rapturous applause. Even outside of the classical wheelhouse, his performances have featured in contemporary hits and blockbuster pictures.

However, his performance at the BST festival in Hyde Park proved a unique challenge. As thousands of classical music fans assembled, enough to qualify for the largest outdoor concert in Europe this century, the heavens opened soaking everyone through to their skin on this unseasonably damp summer evening.

Thankfully, Bocelli proved more than ready for the task. The rain did not slow him down one beat, as he performed with his exceptional orchestra which deftly navigated renditions of operatic mainstays under a rain-deflecting marquee.

Bocelli’s vocals brought some much-needed warmth through the deluge, sounding full and rounded. Vocal duties were also shared alongside a collection of singers ranging from mezzo to soprano, including Bocelli’s daughter Virginia.

Accompanying these operatic wonders was a cavalcade of guest performances. Bocelli weaved through eras of music with ease. Notable contributions came from “Kiss from a Rose” singer Seal as he provided vocals to a stellar performance of the 90’s classic. Additionally, he sang on renditions of Amazing Grace which was dedicated to Hope for Haiti’s Children and a crackling interpretation of Frank Sinatras “My Way”.

The other key performance of the night came from the iconic Hans Zimmer, as he played on some of his most well-known compositions. With tracks featured in the DaVinci Code and Interstellar, the audience was treated to a true treat.

Powering through the weather on the night was no easy feat, but one which Bocelli and his orchestra took in stride. Even under torrential rain, the assembled audience looked to have a thoroughly enjoyable time. It is great to see that even on the 30th anniversary of Time to Say Good Goodbye there are still new heights that he reaches.
