FONTAINES D.C // OVO HYDRO, GLASGOW
I would que for 1000 years to watch Fontaines D.C.
★★★★☆ (4/5)
Enjoy the money OVO Hydro, I hope it makes you very happy. Dear Lord, what a sad little life, OVO Hydro. You (almost) ruined my night, completely so you could have the money and I hope now you spend it on getting some more security staff to prevent people having to que for an hour. The price of a concert ticket increases while the experience appears to worsen, with many of the crowd still queuing to get in as the fantastic Fontaines D.C. begin their 2nd song, Jackie Down the Line.
The meteoric rise of Fontaines D.C. with four great albums in six years the band and heavy touring the band has gone from playing King Tuts in 2019 to the Hydro. They play alternative indie rock and tonight our touring. Prior to them, Sorry are the support band form the evening a post punk duo from London due too the aforementioned que situation I am unfortunate, but they are great and I look forward to seeing them in Glasgow next year.
Anyway, Fontaines D.C. are on good form, even if there is little in the way of crowd interaction from singer, Grian Chatten. The band are business like and crack on with minimum of fuss sounding tight and well honed. Songs from latest album Romance are rapturously received by the lively crowd. Romance expands on Fontaines D.C. established palette of guttural indie rock adding in a wider screen influence of soundings such as shoegaze, britpop and even numetal esque rap. While Grian poetic lyrics.
Tonight there is songs from all over the catalogue. Noods are made to the early material with Big, Hurricane Laughter and Boys in the Better Land from debut album Dorel all getting an airing. Hurricane Laughter goes down particularly well with it tense and hypnotic rhythms and repeating lyrics. In the same vein with baggy 90s inspired drums and a menacing vocal turn is Nabokov, another highlight.
Live an element that is highlight is the way the band use the backing vocals to add melody and texture to their songs, particularly on Desire and Here Is The Thing. The crowd are well invested and treated to excellent performance, finished with a thrilling, (almost) breathless version of Starburster. I would do the miserable que in the pissing Glasgow December rain all over again to see this set but hopefully the Hydro buck up there ideas.
