Empress Of is an artist difficult to pigeonhole however tonight she certainly demonstrates what a fantastic live performer she is. Through her relativity young carer her music has operated in different spheres – indie, R&B, dance, electronica etc. Helped by her studies in sound production and her talented song craft and mesmerising voice she is able to master these different genres effortlessly. She has released 4 albums and tonight is touring and focusing on songs from her independently released critically acclaimed new album For Your Consideration. The eclectic at times bilingual songs are centred around romance they capture both the lust and heartbreak in relationships. They include tonight’s opening songs Preciosa and Femenine, both predominately in Spanish though nothing is lost in translation and the crowd are quickly on side.

Though humble and clearly very appreciative of the adoring Glasgow crowd, Empress Of is a charismatic and captivating performer. Clearly having a great time, her energetic dancing gives the show impetus and the audience bounce and dance with her. Songs from 2020 I’m Your Empress Of go down easily particularly Love Is A Drug with its incessant earworm chorus, the intriguing lusty synths of Bit Of Rain. Followed by For Your Consideration highlight the What Type Of Girl Am I ? showcase more fun with latin rhythms and seductive lyrics which the crowd holler back. While the vulnerable side of Empress Of is demonstrated by Baby Boy and then Lorelei’s tale of infidelity and resulting tears. Throughout Empress Of vocals are on point as is the production as she is well supported by a talented multi-instrumentalist playing keyboards, synths and guitars.

A snippet of I’m Your Empress Of with its hypnotic beat is followed by the catchy and melancholic When I’m With Him. While with an encore of Kiss Me the sultry pop song her collaboration with Rina Sawayama on For Your Consideration and then the show is finished with What’s Love. The 70-minute show passes in the blink of an eye and was a truly brilliant evening with an alluring and talented artist.
