MALLORY KNOX // SWG3, GLASGOW
MALLORY KNOX LIVE AT GLASGOW’S SWG3
★★★★☆ (4.5/5)
Glasgow’s SWG3 was the venue of choice for this evening’s show and sadly due to transport I didn’t manage to catch opening act Gürl which was disappointing, however I arrived just before main support act Call Me Amour were about to take the stage. Fronted by Harry Radford who’s previous band Yashin were Glasgow based, he was clearly pleased to be back again with his new project. After shaking off a false start due to an issue with the PA, they gave us a great taste of what they are all about with a blend of genres that could please many ears. Latest single “Good Day” sported an appearance from Mikey of Mallory Knox to perform his guest part, but stand out track for me was “Bloom” which was more on the heavier side. Having gone in a bit blind to their set, I came away impressed with what they had to offer and will be watching out for their upcoming EP release.
We were all here for Mallory Knox though and after a tongue in cheek play of Taylor Swift’s “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” over the speakers the lights dimmed and the band bound on stage to huge cheers. As a band, they grew very popular back with the release of debut album “Signals” in 2013 and the follow up “Asymmetry” in 2014, but fell away after the departure of frontman Mikey Chapman. They are now back to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Asymmetry with Mikey taking back up the microphone duties once more, however the show tonight felt more like a complete celebration of their history. We were treated to the big hits and a couple of deeper cuts from Asymmetry with standouts being “Dying to Survive” and “Ghost in the Mirror” however it was the tracks from Signals that got the biggest reception. Songs like “Death Rattle” and “Wake Up” sent the crowd wild and the band grinned every time they got the lyrics screamed back at them. Closing their set with massive single “Lighthouse” it was the perfect start to their UK tour and I will be keeping tabs on them for any new music coming in the future.
