Wilco, the American rock band known for their eclectic sound and lyrical depth, took the stage at Edinburgh’s Usher Hall on Saturday evening. The anticipation in the air was palpable as fans of all ages gathered to witness a night of musical magic. And magic is precisely what they delivered.

The venue was a perfect fit for the band's style. Its intimate atmosphere allowed for a sense of closeness with the band, despite the sold-out crowd. As the lights dimmed and the cheers grew louder, the six-member ensemble walked on stage, greeted by thunderous applause.

First up was Courtney Marie-Williams and her band, the supporting act for the evening, warmed up the audience with their engaging performance. While they might not have been a household name, their talent and energy were undeniable. Their set provided a delightful appetiser for the main course that was Wilco.

As Wilco kicked off their set, the audience was immediately drawn into a musical journey that spanned their extensive discography. They opened with Hell Is Chrome, a choice that set the tone for the evening – a perfect blend of their alt-country roots and experimental tendencies then we got “Handshake Drugs”, “I Am My Mother” & “Cruel Country”…..each a total delight to hear played live and loud.

One of the most remarkable aspects of the gig was Wilco's musical prowess. Frontman Jeff Tweedy's distinct voice cut through the air with raw emotion, and his guitar skills were on full display as he effortlessly switched between acoustic and electric. Nels Cline's virtuosic guitar solos added an electrifying dimension to the performance, leaving the audience in awe.

The band crafted a setlist that catered to both die-hard fans and newcomers. Classics like "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart" and "Jesus, Etc." resonated with long-time followers, while newer tracks showcased the band's evolution and willingness to explore new sonic territories.

Wilco's ability to convey deep emotions through their music was evident throughout the gig and often elicited a collective sigh from the audience and some tunes brought tears to many eyes. The band's performance was not just about the music but about connecting with the hearts of everyone in attendance.

While Wilco's music spoke volumes, their stage presence was equally captivating. Jeff Tweedy's banter with the crowd revealed a band that genuinely appreciates their fans. He shared anecdotes and witty remarks that added a personal touch to the gig. It was clear that Wilco wasn't just playing for the audience; they were playing with them.

The gig's visual elements complemented the music beautifully. The lighting design created an immersive atmosphere, enhancing the emotional impact of each song. The backdrop displayed mesmerising visuals that seemed to dance in harmony with the music, creating a multi-sensory experience.

The crowd's cheers for an encore were met with enthusiasm from the band. Wilco returned to the stage, treating fans to an extended set that included “Falling Apart”, “You And I” with Courtney, “California Stars” & “Spiders”. The energy in the venue reached its peak during this encore, with everyone singing along and dancing to the music.

Wilco's gig at the spurious Usher Hall was nothing short of extraordinary. It was a night of musical brilliance, where the band's artistry and passion shone brightly. They bridged the gap between generations of fans and left everyone with a sense of connection and awe. If there's one word to describe the gig, it's "unforgettable."

In a world where live music experiences are treasured, Wilco's performance on Saturday night in Edinburgh will be remembered as a testament to the enduring power of music to touch hearts and souls. It was a night that left us all wanting more, eagerly awaiting the next time Wilco graces our city with their presence.
