STEEL PANTHER // O2 ACADEMY, GLASGOW
STEEL PANTHER kick off their UK and European Tour in Scotland at Glasgow’s O2 Academy.
★★★★★ (5/5)
Hailing from New York City, five piece rock band Winger are a brilliant opener for tonight's show.
Opening their set with "Can't Get Enough" from 1990's "In The Heart Of The Young" album, they have the crowd on their side from the word go. We're also treated to "Proud Desperado" from new album "Seven", which shows they've still got the same swagger they've always had.
Throughout the set, we get lots of guitar solos and crowd interaction, along with the full bands brilliant stage presence. We even get an appearance of Steel Panther frontman Michael Starr, but not on stage....he is in the crowd rocking out with everyone else and fully enjoying Winger's set.
"Easy Come Easy Go" and "Madalaine" round off what is a brilliant set.
If you ever get the chance to check out a Winger show, make sure you take it!
Headliners Steel Panther take to the stage, and after rallying the crowd they kick in to "Eyes of a Panther" from 2009's "Feel The Steel" album.
We get a girl on stage for "Asian Hooker", before a tremendous run through of "All I Wanna Do Is F**k (Myself Tonight)".
New bassist Spyder fits in with the band perfect, and it's as if he has always been there.
The onstage banter between all band members is excellent throughout the set, along with their banter with the sell out crowd.
After "Friends With Benefits", we get a face melting guitar solo from Satchel and the band then launch in to their debut single "Death To All But Metal", which has the full room going wild.
Frontman Michael Starr is on acoustic guitar duties, with drummer Stix Zadinia on the keyboard, for "Ain't Dead Yet" from new record "On The Prowl".
Continuing the theme of having fans onstage, we get local girl Amber up and each band member write a, shall we say "naughty", song for her. It's all taken in good humour, and with Amber's Mum in the crowd, the band give them both backstage passes to continue the party after the show.
Amber is kept onstage while the band perform "Girl From Oklahoma", she even lends her vocal talents to the song and it's fair to say she has a lot of talent in her vocals!
Amber's Mum is then brought on stage, along with a whole load of other girls from the audience, for main set closer "Party All Day (F**k All Night)".
We then get a raucous rendition of "Community Property" before the gig is rounded off with the ever catchy "Gloryhole".
Steel Panther are sometimes disregarded as a "joke" band, but the talent within the group is insane, and who doesn't like a good laugh at some tongue in cheek lyrics! If you ever get the chance to check out one of their live shows, it's something you should not miss!
