Having moved to France with his partner Katia, he made a surprise return to the UK for three live acoustic sets in Newcastle, Hull and Derby. Pete introduced his support to the stage who were Vona Vella and Andrew Cushin.

Vona Vella are a new band who have certainly hit the ground running with their music, which is a mixture between soul, folk and pop. Dan and Izzy had a real nice stage presence and they warmed the crowd nicely. They were one of my highlights of the evening and have added their tracks ‘Sun’ and ‘Maybe It’s Us’ to my day-to-day playlist.

Next up was Andrew Cushin who has been tipped to go to the very top and you can certainly see why after his performance. He recently linked up with Noel Gallagher to produce his latest track ‘Where’s My Family Gone’ and it’s a tune! His Geordie voice was infectious with the crowd and you could see how much it meant to him to be back performing live after lockdown. Stand out tracks were of course ‘Where’s My Family Gone’, ‘Waiting For The Rain’ and ‘It’s Gonna Get Better’.

Finally, the headlining act Pete Doherty took to stage to a huge round of applause from the crowd. He came out in his flat cap, guitar in hand with a huge grin on his face to a full Riverside venue. He opened the set with a Libertines classic “Music When the Lights Go Out’, which really got his fans in the mood for a party despite it only being an acoustic set.

He played a mixture of The Libertines and Babyshambles tracks with classics like ‘Don’t Look Back into the Sun’, ‘You’re My Waterloo’ and finished on ‘Last of the English Roses’. The venue was filled with smiles, waving arms and raised plastic pint glasses as they enjoyed every moment of the set. Pete also stayed behind and took his acoustic guitar outside with his fans to have a jam.

If you get chance to see Pete Doherty this year, I’d certainly recommend grabbing yourself some tickets, what an evening!
