Having heard before the show that there was to be no support bands for the evening, I made my way to the Cathouse in Glasgow slightly unsure of what would unfold. Upon entrance, there was a buzz of conversation and what sounded like old American folk music playing over the speakers. Slightly different to your usual gig set up, it was only a matter of time before Fever 333 took to the stage, with front man Jason Aalon Butler explaining later in the night the reason behind them being the sole performers for the tour saying “when we booked the tour they told us we’d need to bring some support to sell the shows out, but they sold out within a day of going on sale, so we are here to show our appreciation of your support”. With their “demonstrations” as they call them being all about proving people have the strength to break the norm, this theory has certainly been proven with the Cathouse being packed to capacity for a band still relatively fresh on the scene.

Taking the stage and storming into main opening track “Burn It” from their recently released debut full length, the energy level was intense from the start with Jason screaming at the crowd to look alive and everyone responded with aplomb. The venue was chaos with crowd surfing and moshing a plenty and everyone bouncing along to huge tracks like “Prey for Me” and “One of Us”. Jason even have a nod to his Scottish heritage with their track “Made An America” being changed to “Made in Glasgow” for the night and thanks being raised in Scotland for him being “tough as nails”.

A shout out also has to be made to guitarist Steve Harrison and drummer Aric Improta for also doing their part in keeping the energy flowing, with Steve bounding across the stage from side to side and Aric getting on top of his drum stool occasionally to spur the crowd on. Things came to a head near the end of the set during their track “Hunting Season” when Steve decided to play the song from on top of the bar at the other end of the room while Jason climbed on top of a boxing machine to see the song out in style.

Taking no support along for their debut headline tour was a bold move, but absolutely paid off as the whole crowd was there to support them and showed during the performance. With another UK tour already booked, these shows are definitely ones you should not miss.
