With a debut album on the horizon, Gus Dapperton is covering Europe with his ‘Where Polly People go to Read’ tour. Hailing from New York, the audience is gearing up to see him return for the second time after his last appearance at The Garage, London.

Kicking the night off at London’s Oval Space is support from Rainy Miller and pig with warm but energetic performances. With pig, this is what a support act should be like: you’re eager for the headliner to start, but your mind is taken away as you sway to millennial life issues with tracks such as ‘Liking All Your Posts’. There’s dancing, moshing and most importantly, an atmosphere that is ready for Gus Dapperton.
An excited crowd begin to chant his name as the time draws nearer. He emerges and the energy erupts as he dives straight into a fan-favourite in ‘Gum, Toe and Sole’. Fans instantly break out into an enormous rendition of ‘da da da da da’ as he dances across the stage in his exuberant and bold personality - and they love it. The relief of the wait being over floods over Oval Space. Gus is here, and this is when the real fun begins.
With a currently limited discography, he performs almost all of his tracks. But don’t be fooled - there is never a low moment. The whole hour feels as if each song is as popular as the next, going through the upbeat ‘Prune, You Talk Funny’ to the slower ‘Ditch’. He plays ‘My Favorite Fish’ (his most recently released single), and from the response it gets, it’s clear that Gus’ Where Polly People go to Read era will undoubtedly be explosive.
After finishing on ‘World Class Cinema’, the wait begins for the encore. I wonder what he would play, given that he had gone through almost all of his discography. He emerges for the second time of the evening, gradually builds up to a cover of The Beatles’ ‘Twist and Shout’ and as he unexpectedly executes a stage dive, it dawns on me that this is a show you’ll wish you could go back to.
