TEARS FOR FEARS // THE SSE HYDRO, GLASGOW
It was a night of 80s nostalgia again in Glasgow with not one but two major acts showing they still have what it took to make them big hitters back in the day.
★★★★☆
First to take the Glasgow stage was 80s icon Alison Moyet. Originally from two piece band Yazoo with Vince Clarke, she demonstrated her considerable vocal talents with numbers from the Yazoo catalogue plus delving into her own solo career too. Hits such as Don’t Go, Nobodys Diary and Only You, before All Cried Out and Love Resurrection had the crowd on their feet and warmed up nicely for the headliners due on stage shortly afterwards.
Intro music for Tears For Fears was supplied by the artist Lorde and her take on the classic Everybody Wants To Rule The World, albeit a very different take on the original, much slower, darker. But the fans in the crowd didn’t have long to wait, as when the intro music died down, the band already on stage, they burst into the original version of the hit single, everyone in the crowd word perfect in a mass singalong, and the evening was underway again.
The setlist tonight covered all the bases, from the big chart hits from the early to mid 80s, the popular album tracks and some newer material. But it was the classics the crowd came for, and they sounded as good today as they did, scarily 35 years ago. Pale Shelter, Mad World, Advice For The Young At Heart, Change, the fabulous Woman in Chains accompanied by Carina Round, and closing the first set Head Over Heels.
After a short break the band returned for one last karaoke with the Glasgow audience, Shout, from the 1985 album Songs from the Big Chair.
This was a great evening of 80s music, nostalgia, memories of the times, the places and the clothes. The artists tonight may have changed a lot over the years, as have much of the audience, but good music will always be good music. Tears For Fears gave a terrific performance, the stage show and lighting was perfect, the music and vocals were on point too. The band left a rapturous applause and the audience left head over heels.
