SPORTS TEAM // KING TUT'S WAH WAH HUT, GLASGOW
Sports Team continue momentum with high octane performance in sold out King Tuts
★★★★★ (5/5)
If there was ever a band that could be an honouree member of the Glasgow music scene it would be Sports Team. Chaos in the crowd, stage dives and fans of all ages, they have become well renowned for their unforgettable live shows.
Having released new singles since they sold out the Garage Attic bar back in March, selling out the historic King Tuts never seemed to be in doubt for them. Playing the Tuts is almost a right of passage for British bands.
You wouldn’t have believed it is a Wednesday night. The packed King Tuts floor explodes as the band take the stage. Frontman Alex Brice wastes no time in inciting mayhem as he balances on the barrier barking lyrics to the crowd.
The set is packed with what have become favourites. M5 makes an appearance early leading to several fans attempting crowd surfs before being dragged out of the crowd by the bouncer – this didn’t solve the issue as the often the crowd surfer was let back into the crowd to repeat the same act again.
It is obvious Brice and the band love this, he signals for people in the middle to build up to mosh pits whilst he performs dance moves that I can honestly say I’ve never seen before. Apparently they received letters from venues after this show warning them not to encourage this kind of behaviour in the crowd. They, however, don’t come across as the kind of band who are likely to take this on board.
They give us an insight into their upcoming album by letting us here two tracks of it. The gig comes full circle when the y indulge in some nostalgia and play their first ever single Stanton. Brice jumps into the crowd for this one and astonishgly still manages to stay in pitch while fans grab onto him. Not that he needed to, the gig finishes with the packed King Tuts screaming the words “I wanna buy you a flipscreen Motorola”.
