AMBER RUN // WYLAM BREWERY, NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE
It’s was the first time I’d been to the Wylam Brewery and what a great venue it is! It boasts high ceilings, a lovely atmosphere and a great range of ale and cider, a win win in my eyes!
★★★★★ (5/5)
Supporting Amber Run in their tour are Stereo Honey. They are the perfect support act with their indie, electronic rock vibe. Pete Restrick, the lead singer has an incredibly powerful and pitch-perfect voice, similar to the lead vocalist of Hurts. They played some of their hits “The Bay” and “What Makes a Man”, which got the crowd warmed up for the night ahead.
Amber Run, as headline act, came out to a great reception from their fans as Joe, the lead singer shouted “who wants to feel good on a Tuesday night?!”. Their set was opened with “Neon Circus” to warm up the crowd and what a kick start it was!
Their set was full of emotion, ranging from beautifully written break-up songs to others that would have you bouncing around the house. Pete, from Stereo Honey was introduced back on to the stage to perform a duet with Joe for their song “Affection”, which was one of the many iconic moments of the night.
Halfway through their set, Joe took a break, explaining the mixed emotions he felt about playing in Newcastle. The last time they visited, they played at the O2 Academy and Joe had learnt that his grandfather had sadly passed away. Following this, “Amen” was written, essentially as a eulogy. The band took a back seat to let Joe play the song on his own, in what was an incredibly powerful and moving moment, leaving not a dry eye in the room.
To lift the mood, the band then played a golden oldie, “Noah”. It didn’t take much encouragement from Joe to make the crowd sing along with the chorus echoing around the high ceilings of the Brewery. The night then ended with an encore of “I Found”, arguably, their greatest hit yet.
Most bands say they enjoy playing in Newcastle, as fans are so warm and friendly. We truly do believe both bands enjoyed their set, and we hope we see them soon!
