LISA STANSFIELD // ROYAL CONCERT HALL, GLASGOW
Lisa Stansfield returns to Scotland for an Sold-Out show at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall, as part of her ‘30th Anniversary Celebrations Tour’.
★★★★★ (5/5)
Jazz Morley is a Bournemouth based singer-songwriter who has a beautiful soul-influenced voice. She certainly grabbed the attention of the early crowd at the Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow as she, accompanied by a keyboard player, performed an excellent 30 minute set.
Occasionlly taking to the keyboard herself, Jazz Morley displayed a vocal range which fitted her musical style of slow, but well-constructed, songs perfectly.
Touching in the issue of her own, as well as others mental health, jazz Morley has put together a moving song to highlight an issue close to her heart and finished off her set with a very moving song about her Brother who was a soldier in Afghanistan before quietly leaving the stage to a very well-deserved round of applause.
The Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow welcomed back Lisa Stansfield like an old friend who had not visited for a while and made her feel at home from the second she stepped on stage.
It’s been a while since Lisa Stansfield toured but when you have sold close to 20 million albums it’s hard for people to forget the songs and music that played an integral part of their formative years and it was many of those songs that received an airing, and relevant rousing reception, during the show tonight.
You could feel the crowd just wanted to get up and dance from the beginning of the show and by 15 minutes into the show the entire crowd were indeed on their feet, singing along as Lisa Stansfield told us, in the words of her own song that this was The Right Time.
Promoting her Affection album, now in its 30th year, it sounds as fresh as ever as each hit brings the crowd to a higher level of cheers and applause than the one before.
It’s often said that simple is best and Lisa Stansfield proves this tonight with no fancy set changes, no costume changes. It’s a simple set, the letters LISA in black on a huge white backdrop and an 11-piece band who are clearly excellent musicians and perfectly compliment the flawless vocals of Lisa Stansfield.
With most people expecting All Around The World to be one of the final songs of the set it perhaps caught a few people by welcome surprise when it was played a little earlier in the set. It certainly had the last remaining seated members of the crowd on their feet and dancing in the aisles of the Royal Concert Hall, as Lisa Stansfield displayed an absolute masterclass in sheer entertainment and value for ticket money.
Occasionally there is an artist who fails to properly connect with their audience, but this was never a danger with Lisa Stansfield as she prowled the stage from end to end and when she looked in your direction, you really felt she was looking and communicating directly to you.
Many an act could learn from her stage craft and take on some of the obvious enjoyment that Lisa Stansfield was spreading through the auditorium.
As the concert came to an end with an outstanding version of Live Together the crowd responded as only a Glasgow crowd can and almost lifted the roof off the venue with the appreciation shown for the show they had just witnessed.
Lisa Stansfield remains at the absolute top of her game and as the crowd filtered out into the cold night air I imagine that they, as I was, were hoping that it won’t be too long until we see and hear Lisa Stansfield back in Glasgow.
