THRICE & REFUSED // BARROWLAND BALLROOM, GLASGOW
THRICE CELEBRATE 15 YEARS OF ‘Vheissu’ WITH CO-HEADLINE TOUR WITH ‘REFUSED’ AT GLASGOW’S BARROWLANDS.

Kicking off the night was Gouge Away from Florida who took to the stage rather early to a sparse crowd and gave us half an hour of heavy music mainly consisting of newer material from latest album “Burnt Sugar” which although I could appreciate the style of music and effort the band were putting into their performance, their music wasn’t exactly my cup of tea. Highlight of the set though was vocalist Christina’s energy and presence on stage, but overall as the warmup act of the evening there could have been a little more interaction with the growing audience.
Being a co-headline tour, next up was our first main act of the evening hailing from Sweden. Refused were here with their brand new album “War Music” in tow and were excellent. New songs like “Violent Reaction” and “Blood Red” sounded great live and frontman Dennis Lyxzén commanded the stage with his mic swings and fetching dance moves. The crowd lit up though when they dropped their final track of the evening “New Noise” from their huge album “The Shape of Punk to Come” and ended their portion of the evening with a bang. Refused are a band who have been going a long time now and show no signs of slowing down.
Finally closing the night were Californian post-hardcore stalwarts Thrice finally back on UK shores to promote latest album “Palms” and we were treated to a selection of new tracks including “Only Us” and “Just Breathe”. This was also the first time the band have played songs from previous album “To Be Everywhere Is To Be Nowhere” live in Scotland as the album tour cycle never made it here. Songs like “Hurricane” and “Black Honey” sounded excellent and Dustin’s husky voice was sublime throughout the set. Throwing in some older fan favourite tracks and a couple of deeper cuts, Thrice ended with one of their latest tracks “Beyond the Pines” which is the closing track from Palms and also a perfect closure to the evening.
