TEN TONNES // RIVERSIDE, NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE
Newcastle’s Riverside was packed to the rafters with a young crowd, eagerly awaiting Ten Tonnes return to the North East.
★★★★★ (5/5)
Liverpool born Zuzu warmed the crowd perfectly with her upbeat pop tracks. Having supported Peace and The Courteeners during their 2018 tour, they are going from strength to strength and certainly aren’t far off headlining their own shows! The crowd took to them straight away, especially a girl called Sophie who couldn’t hold back her admiration for the band by hopping over the barrier to dance. This became quite a love affair as a conversation continued through their set.
Ten Tonnes made their way onto the stage to the song ‘Sweet Caroline’, it was as almost as if we were at the boxing but it set the scene brilliantly! From that moment onwards the crowd were bouncing, chanting and shuffling around! Their set was opened by ‘Lay It On Me’, which had a great reception followed by their 2017 hit ‘Born To Lose’. This instigated a lively atmosphere, which was maintained with ‘Too Late’, ‘Silver Heat’ and ‘Cracks Between’. The moment ‘Too Late’ broke out, the crowd broke out into a series of mosh pits, which became a common theme of the evening.
Ten Tonnes have a very illustrious sound of heavy guitar riffs and strong vocals. Lead singer, Ethan Barnett, also George Ezra’s younger brother, orchestrated the crowd effortlessly; it must run in the family! He asked their fans one question, “Are you up for a party?” and that’s exactly what we got!
The track ‘G.I.V.E.’ was performed to perfection, which has a very catchy chorus and was well orchestrated to the crowd. Then came the cover of The Foundations ‘Build Me Up Buttercup’, the place erupted with “I need you (I need you) more than anyone, darlin'” echoing around the place. It was an interesting change in tempo but it worked a treat!
Later in the evening it took a more chilled twist with the track ‘Missing You’, which triggered the ambient phones in the air moment with its slow acoustic guitar riffs. The night ended with the indie-pop favourite ‘Lucy’, which is their most iconic track, which made a perfect finale to what was a strong performance! They’re still pretty fresh to the music scene but they’re going to go far!
