‘Hopes and Fears‘ was one of the first albums I was given when I was 13 and I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve played it. This was also the first time I’d seen them live since their 2007 arena tour so I was chomping at the bit to watch them live again.

They were supported by Marie White, credited as Glastonbury’s Emerging Talent. Her vocals are delivered with power, complimented with harmonious backing and she set the scene perfectly for the main attraction.

A full house at the O2 City Hall in Newcastle embraced the band as it emerged, silhouetted against a hazy red mist.

Despite the venue being an all seater one, the audience was soon on its feet as Tom Chaplin entreated everyone to rise, adding “you can sit for the chilled ones”. Needless to say no remained seated!

They opened their set with a song from the new album ‘You’re Not Home’, a chilled instrumental start to warm the hearts of the crowd who were about to  experience a two hour long performance filled with nostalgia.

A giant screen created the backdrop, with album covers, quirky images and the lyrics to their songs for the benefit of the very few who weren’t familiar with them. So no excuse for not singing along then!

The 20+ song set was jam packed with classics such as ‘Everybody’s Changing’, ‘Nothing In My Way’ and ‘Somewhere Only We Know’. This created a wonderful, harmonious atmosphere, with the whole crowd joining in along with Tom.

Some of the new tracks that featured were ‘The Way I Feel’, ‘Phases’ and a new crowd favourite ‘Love Too Much’.

On the whole it was a great trip down memory lane and even though they’ve taken a slightly different approach with the new album, it certainly proved a hit with the audience.

Keane really are back on top form!
