FROM THE JAM // QMU, GLASGOW

From the opening drum beats of The Batman theme as the band take to the stage, the Glasgow crowd were pumped up for the latest visit to their city of From The Jam, named because original bass player Bruce Foxton is….. From The Jam.

Opening with All Mod Cons, the setlist would see a run thru of the album, as it is just past its 40th anniversary.  40 years since such a classic album was released, and yet it still sounds as good as it always has.  Tracks such as To Be Someone, Mr Clean, David Watts, The Place I love, Billy Hunt, just terrific music and astonishing to think Paul Weller was 20 years old when he wrote it.

Bruce Foxton is joined on stage by Mike Randon on drums and Russell Hastings up front on lead vocals, a more than able substitute for the Paul Weller role.  Weller himself seems to be doing not too bad on his own and has refrained from joining the band up to now.

With the All Mod Cons section complete after Down in the Tube Station at Midnight, it was onto the rest of the bands back catalogue to choose from.  And what a catalogue to choose from.  Town Called Malice, That’s Entertainment, Start! and Strange Town.  This completed the main set and the band left for a much deserved break.  On returning to the stage, they blitzed the encore with two of the bands biggest hitters.  The Eton Rifles, main single from the bands fourth album Setting Sons and the bands 1st top 5 hit single, which was followed on the night and back in the day by The Jam’s first British number one single, Going Underground.

Tonight was a journey back in time, a chance to see an old hero in Bruce Foxton, still a tremendous musician, still doing his stuff and scissor kicking around the stage as he used to.  It was a chance for the crowd to see and hear the music they grew up with, up close, personal and very loud.  It was a chance to relive their youth and go back to the days of the dear old Glasgow Apollo, when the music you listened to and clothes you wore defined who you were.  But mainly it was a night for all to enjoy, a terrific gig of just great timeless music, in a great venue, with a great atmosphere.  Every one of the crowd left with a smile on their face, and everyone in agreement…

THAT IS ENTERTAINMENT!!!
